One of the biggest roadblocks that a lot of us book nerds face in college is learning not to read our sources like we read fiction. Successful professors and grad students aren't reading every single page of every single book that they're assigned. Instead, they're synthesizing that material through effective outlining.

In terms of just trying to get through the class then yes this is a great idea, but for extra curricular reading for one's personal education, this will result in a person coming up short. For example, any reasonable person wouldn't include a lot of the details of Herodotus' digressions on Egypt or the culture of Persians in their outline since they're just not that relevant to the overall book. However, those 'irrelevant' digressions are actually super important historical data points that can serve a person very well for their overall understanding of the ancient world which they can connect with many other data points from other random digressions in other books.

Random, seemingly irrelevant stuff like the process that Ben Franklin went through to learn the Latin languages have been very beneficial to me in my own personal life even though such details would never make it to any overall outline needed for school and if I was approaching such books through only keeping the outline in mind, I would have missed.
