Thanks for reacting to this! We love making these episodes that go deeper into political and economic reasons of the historical upheavals.

1639 my ancestor Richard Lee the immigrant, came to the US. His brother John stayed. So both were young men during this time. John's descendants, everyone would know the actor Christopher Lee, and from Richard, you got Richard Henry Lee, Frances Lightfoot Lee, and Henry Lee III, who helped found the USA. From Henry, you got Robert E Lee, also Zackery Taylor was the grandson of Elizabeth Lee, and also the Actress Lillian Gish and Dorthy Gish were both descendants of Zackery Taylor. Even today I have several family members in England on my fathers' side.

I love how every video you react to you will pause and say something like “and this is important to note as well” and then unpause and the video say it’s literally a second later. It’s my favourite moments in these videos

Important to remember that Charles was not originally heir to the throne. He only became the heir when his older brother, Henry, died at the age of 17. This is a similar situation to Tsar Nicholas II in Russia. Sometimes the second in line aren't coached in how to rule very well because its seen as unlikely the will actually be king. And I think this is one of those examples of that producing a failed ruler.

Fellow Buckeye here, thanks for covering this. My 10th Great-grandfather, Sir Philip Stapleton of Wighill and of Warter-on-the-Wolds, Yorkshire was an English Member of Parliament, a supporter of the Parliamentary cause during the English Civil War. He commanded a brigade of cavalry at the Battle of Edgehill and couple of other battles. He fell out of favor with the Parliament when he opposed the Self-Denying Ordinance and the advancement of Oliver Cromwell. In 1647, he was one of the eleven members of Parliament impeached by the army, but managed to escape to Calais where he died shortly after arriving. I've gotten into my genealogy these last few months and was just looking into the history of this era. Timely information, thanks again. I won't hold your Cromwell roots against you, lol.

I'm American, but I learned a lot about the English Civil War after visiting Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire. We bought a book about the Tudor an Stuart monarchy, and it was pretty cool.

Great video. As someone from Nottingham, we have good ties to the civil war. One of my favourite parts of our history. The whole situation was so complicated but at the same time quite easily avoided.

8:29 The power of the purse....not so much in Charles' time. One of the reasons William of Orange accepted the invitation to invade England and take the throne, was that he wasn't able to get the Dutch provinces to fund the Republic's war (against France at the time I believe) while as English King he could obtain that much easier.

Had been hoping you get to the British Civil Wars eventually, superb, I think it’s so key for understanding the Revolutionary War period more fully

I think another individual to mention here is the Duke of Buckingham, he was put i charge of those badly executed expeditions to the continent. He had been Charles' favourite at court for some time but was considered by most of Parliament as little more than an idiot.

After the botched expeditions Parilament demanded Charles cut ties with Buckingham but, of course, Charles took this personally and refused. The matter became academic when Buckingham was stabbed to death some time later.

Really cool you're doing this series Chris, looking forward to seeing more soon!

I actually did some family tree research as well on my own fam. I totale understand the excitement you get out of the research! Finding new leads to interesting people.

Via my moms side I found a link to the french kings, although it was not a blood link, but like the sister of one of my ancesters married and had children with someone who came from a famous cavalier family who had direct links to constance of france. It wasnt even a blood link but it was so excited!

And you know, once you can link to one of the kings, you automaticly get most of the other kings as well
And as a bonus charlemagne ;) on whos every claim in european monarchie is based :)

Anyway, love your Chanel, love your content, love your calm voice.

You could go back even further to the House of Normandy. The Anarchy was the first of the civil wars that plagued the post 1066 monarchs. Following the death of the heir to Henry I, the crown was in dispute between Stephen and Matilda ( aka Empress Maud). This was eventually settled by Stephen naming Henry II as his heir for England, Henry being Matilda’s son and the first Plantagenet King.

"Our textbook we'll use to have a further discussion, " is a perfect description. Also perfect and something I'd never considered, was the American civil war cause, and the differences of the classes in their consideration for what they were fighting for.

Not only am I a direct descendent of Oliver Cromwell, I am also a direct descendant of Owain Tudor, Hank 8.0's g-granddad. The Tudor and Stuart eras have always fascinated me.

You would think that once Edward Walley made it to America, there'd be almost no chance of finding him, but he still felt compelled to go into hiding. I just feel like if someone came up to you back in that day and accused you of being someone wanted, you could easily say "no I am not this person" and that would buy you time before they produced someone who knew you personally. Until then, what would they do, look at your photo ID? Rely on a drawing? Perplexing to me
