Brian had had his breakdown before the term 'genius' was ever affixed to him. He quit touring after having a breakdown on an airplane in December 1964. His breakdown was the reason he could create Pet Sounds alone with The Wrecking Crew while the band toured Japan and Asia.

Brian Wilson was a genuis because he knew exactly what to do to get the right sound. He didn't settle for, "That's good enough guys, we can use it, go home now" Brian demanded perfection, he never settled for just ok.

Personally, I think Brian is on the Autism spectrum, and felt that way for a long time. Artistic/Autistic people tend to be very sensitive to criticism, and extremely sensitive to people who FORCE them to be creative

That didn't ruin his career. Mental Illness, insecurity, and assholes who fed into that insecurity (Ahem *Mike Love* Ahem *Murray Wilson* ) were far more responsible for his issues.
