DOOM in Space - NDC TechTown

Running DOOM on a Satellite.

This presentation was made recently at @NDC TechTown and because this is a programming conference, I went into more detail about the project than I did in my original video.

One minor correction: It's using Ångström/Poky distro (Yocto Project).

Satellite photos: ©ESA
Photo of earth: ©NASA
DOOM is ©ID Software - Project only used the shareware edition of the game.

Okay now I understand why I've been getting your nordic shorts. No complaint, I like those too, but this is more like what I usually watch. Great presentation and good videos!

you run the full nerd spectrum i see, from nordic geo-fun-facts to computer wizardry. big respects to you. had a big chuckle at the "project ideas: port doom to your favorite OS" bit, remembering all the times doom has been run on a watch, a smart fridge, pregnancy test and name tag xD

This is the type of doomscrolling I enjoy

I wanted to focus on this stellar talk, but I kept spacing out.

As a software engineer and nerd that learns Danish (😖) in my free time, I feel like this channel has been tailormade for me.
Great talk, absolutely fascinating how "can we make it run doom" has evolved from a meme to a scientific experiment and that my favourite nordic culture embassador was directly involved :D
Hav det godt!

"Can it run DOOM" and "Can it play Bad Apple" will forever remain the 2 questions with any hardware. Though I imagine the satellite has neither audio nor video processing, so it probably can't play Bad Apple 😂

great talk, had to take a break from game dev to watch this (im making a space exploration game so it seemed appropriate)

I do like seeing that your humor extends to real life. Great job on the nerdy presentation.

I saw the story. Immediately came to the full video. Great to see this presentation! Thank you for creating and sharing it. A fantastic project with lots of fun parts. I hope schools and colleges encourage their students to be part of the Volt project.

2007-2015: But can it run Crysis?
2015-forever: Can it run Doom though?

Im an avid DOOM enjoyer, so seeing things like PrBoom+ and the DoomWiki in the video was fun!
There are actually many community made projects that involve messing with the color values for the entire pallette. 20X6 comes to mind. It's interesting that you came to the same conclusion as some mappers do, but for an entirely different reason!

Brilliant, the ultimate 'Will it run Doom' experiment.

Awesome talk, so fun! Looking forward to see DOOM-based gravitational wave detector on the new satellite :)

Wait, does that mean you could use Doom as humanity's worst checksum? You translate the message into game-inputs then add the resulting game-state at the end of the message. The decoder gets the message, tries the inputs and checks if the results match.

Such a fun talk to watch. Especially after watching your initial DOOM video

Said it before, and I'll say it again:
30 cm high? I thought it was supposed to be in orbit.

I'm glad that you dismised the myth of the cosmic ray in the Mario speedrun; videogame tabloids don't stop spreading it, and some people in the speedrun community are quite tired of it. Also awesome video
