As a math teacher thanks, the 1a is a good idea. My students get the concept but the new notation and the explaining of the process brought into year 11 seems to confuse them. Will use that in the future.

There are many ways to solve this and that is why I like maths. Straight away without even thinking about the question too much I just multiplied eqn 1 by -5 and eqn 2 by 7 and added eqn 1 and 2 and then solved.
