I think it depends on your genetics. Maybe there's a specific gene that determines if radiation gives mutations, kills you or ghoulifies you.

Pretty sure Moira Brown only became a ghoul because she was outside of megaton when it happened. Everyone inside literally exploded . Even the robot that patrols the outside is found in pieces.

I always figured it may be an inheirited trait cause of the kid in the fridge quest where it turns out Billy's mom and dad also turned into ghouls

I think its genetics, like some people have higher tolerance to radiation so rather than dropping like a sack of potatoes they get wrinkly and lose their nose

Honestly I like to imagine that its EITHER you die or become a ghoul, like the people who become ghouls are just the ones who ended up with that 0.01% survival rate

It would be a fun idea to have ghoulification become either a feature or a rare occurrence when your rads meter gets high and you gain special perks but loose charisma or something because people don’t want to be around you except other types of ghouls.

As far as Megaton it depends on when you detonate the bomb. If you wait until after completion of the main quest and the Children of Atom set up outside the city two of their members also turn into ghouls. The guard outside the door and the leader. 😀

I would LOVE to see a Fallout game that let's you choose as main character between : a ghoul, a synth, a supermutant and a human. Like in Skyrim

Moira Brown was out of town when the bomb went off. The rest of Megaton didn't turn into ghouls because they were at the center of the blast, and we're probably vaporized instantly.

Moira is the exception, though I couldn't give you the reason why she turned. Perhaps her experimentation with radiation, and rad resisting chems played a factor as well.

I believe it has something to do with the consumption of Rad-X, it could also be related to genetics, or the Chinese may have added something to the bombs to prevent the Enclave from rebuilding the U.S.

I always thought it was traces of the new plague that ghoulifyed someone after exposure to radiation

In my headcanon ghoulification comes from low exposure to the FEV virus.

Endurance and Luck can play into mind in terms of ghoulification.

Probably yeah, but i imagine a specfic amount makes you regular, and a specfic amount makes you a glowing one.

It’s likely a genetic trait. That some are just built to change with the rads while others straight up die.
