This story could've turned out a lot different if they put William in sports instead of concentrating on academics.

I watched this movie. The father is a Narcissist and was so jealous and insecure that he didn't get as much attention as his Neanderthal son did, that he destroyed his relationship with his wife and his son. It was sad to see the ending that the Neanderthal has more humanity in him than his father and most human beings he was interacting with.

That dad managed to screw up his relation with his son 3 times in a row after doing the same thing with his wife the dude doesnt learn from his mistakes its so annoying

It is said that a living Neanderthal would probably have a voice very different from a modern human. Their vocal chords make scientists think that Neanderthals could pronounce some of the sounds we can’t and couldn’t pronounce some sounds that we can.

Who the fuck tells their child that it was a failure, a caveman, a freak in a sense. Brings me back to a quote I read a while back:
"All children deserve parents, but not all parents deserve children."

I vividly remember a conversation I once had with my grandfather (may he rest in peace). I was maybe 10 or 11 years old. My mind was all about Jurassic Park and dinosaurs. Back then, the South Koreans were making major headlines for being in the planning stages of bringing back mammoths. That got me and my sci-fi filled childish mind going crazy over the idea of bringing back other prehistoric lifeforms. And I remember my grandfather saying "If someone managed to pull something like that off, all we would get would be the loneliest creature in the world."

Seems like a very nice movie that you'd normally never see if it wasn't for this channel. Thanks.

A decent concept, but poorly executed. The rejection William feels from both his peers and his father are supposed to represent the rejection some people feel when they are "othered" or ostracized and unfairly maligned for traits they didn't choose. The problem is, if anyone should know that Neanderthals were intelligent beings with their own culture, it would be his dad. The researcher who studies Neanderthals should know this, but because it's his dad (someone who should love him) the writer made him uncharacteristically cruel to drive home the plot of feeling rejected. That's what happens with you're a writer who comes up with great ideas but is unable to put them on paper without relying on old tropes.

The decision to put the college professor who deals with Neanderthals in his class defining them as stupid brutes in at the beginning of the 00's (the period in which I imagine the experiment with William would have taken place) is quite strange.
Even popular science channels, as Discovery or Natural Geographic, already spoke of Neanderthals as a very intelligent species with complex social interactions in the 90s.

Neanderthals are known for very skillful stone knapping of tools, so it does not make sense that William would be unintelligent or clumsy with small objects like pencils. Their burial practices suggest care for the elderly and a spiritual life.
In fact, Neanderthals and Sapiens were contemporaneous for a while, and most modern humans have Neanderthal DNA. It appears that Neanderthals were absorbed into the larger Sapiens population, not going extinct in the ordinary sense.
So, I'll watch this movie if I can, but I'm not expecting to be impressed.

Neanderthals were considered to be simple and brutish until quite recently. However, I have read that evidence has been discovered that indicates that they may have a very sophisticated culture. Cave paintings, jewelry, and burial rites that were previously identified as belonging to Homo Sapiens have been re-dated to Neanderthal times. Plus, they were originally believed to have died out, probably due to competition from more evolved Homo Sapiens. But VERY recently Neanderthal (and Denisovan) DNA have been identified in some modern humans. This indicates that they didn't exactly disappear, but merged with us.
The only real problem I have with this movie is something the filmmakers have no control over. They only have access to Homo Sapiens actors. The Neanderthal skull was shaped differently from ours. They had a differently shaped lower jaw and their brain was also shaped different. That actor playing William did an awesome job. But the fundamental differences between the two body types extend to more than you can mimic with makeup effects. On the other hand, no real evidence has been discovered that indicate that Neanderthals weren't as "smart" as Homo Sapiens. They were around for a very long time. As a result, I would assume that they were just as capable as we are using language, doing math, and adapting to life in the 21st century.

That seems...unlikely. Neanderthal were highly intelligent, but not in the same way than our branch. Once they found a satisfying solution, they kept it. Until they REALLY need another one. There is a possibility that some autistic traits comes from our neanderthal heritage. They were expert craftsmen, and holding a pencil shouldn't be a problem to them.
They also were extraordinary strong ang agile. The 'clone' should be olympic level at an early age...

I have a hard time believing anyone would act the way these people did in this movie.

That dad is less intelligent than the Neanderthal. A Neanderthal doesn’t make a mistake twice but that father keeps making them. But interesting movie to watch. Definitely going to watch it.

You know what he should have done? He should have travelled to a place maybe like Greenland, or Norway, and lived with tribes like the Inuit or Sami. Away from civilization, helping them hunt and fish and survive day to day. I'm sure they would have loved to have someone of his strength helping them out and he might not be able to do every single thing that they can do with his hands but he could have had his role in the tribe that they all respected.

What I find interesting about this is that everyone tried to categorize William as a brute and savage, but ended up displaying more of those traits than him.

What kind of Neanderthal specialist would call them "stupid brutes"? That's actually the most unrealistic part of the movie 😂

The man just wanted a normal life, and that jerk wanted him to be a lab rat, an experiment. I feel this movie has a lot to teach people nowadays

The kid William is the most normal looking kid ive seen. They didn't even do anything except enlarge a few of his facial features using CGI. I don't think a child like that would ever be bullied, he looks perfectly normal.
