As someone who regularly goes to Beijing, that stadium is 100% NOT inactive, there are still regular sporting events and concerts there. It is pretty famous there, locals call it the “birds nest” and again, it’s definitely not inactive.

After seeing how horrible Tokyo was treated by the Olympic administrators, cities quit wanting the Olympics held in their city. Although it was Covid, the head of the Olympics committee insisted Tokyo carry on and do the Olympics but since the Japanese organizers didn’t want to risk it, they boycotted and therefore the opening ceremony was cancelled and a substitute was quickly put together within a couple weeks by those who didn’t boycott. And after all that work, when the head of the Olympics committee saw the cheap job that was done because of his fault, he came out and announced that he actually didn’t want to do the Olympics and that it was Tokyo that wanted to hold the Olympics during the midst of Covid. It shows how scumbags the Olympic committee is, especially the head official.

people in Greece are still devastated to this day by the spending generated to host the olympics 20 years ago

Los Angeles 1984 turned a profit because they decided to use existing venues for everything. Similarly, they plan to do that again in 2028 so they turn a profit once more

The transformation of Olympic facilities into community spaces is truly impressive and beneficial for all.

Salt Lake City not only successfully turned a profit during the 2002 Olympics, but they also have kept and maintained all of the facilities, most of which either were privately owned ski parks or were converted for use in training North American athletes, especially Team USA. The amount of renovations needed for 2034 are so low that Salt Lake City is expected to turn a profit again. (You can actually go to visit the Utah Olympic Park. It's really cool. Definitely worth the trip.)

Here in Puerto Rico, the Jose Miguel Agrelot coliseum, also known as "Choliseo" was built with the intent of hosting the Olympics. When Athens was named as the official host, the government didn't know what to do with the coliseum. They decided to finish construction anyway because the island needed a newer and bigger arena regardless. I find that very interesting.

Beijing’s stadium is not inactive, it’s a popular concert venue and they host national sporting events there.

I think Salt Lake City’s Winter Olympics in 2002 were the exception. They already had most of their venues, and it gave them an excuse to revamp their public transportation system. I *think* they actually turned a profit.

This is actually not the reason why cities don't want to host anymore. The same thing was true back in 2004. No, the real reason is that now there are new requirements to curb this problem and cities are required to use existing or temporary venues and reuse the ones they build after the games. This makes it harder to make a bid.

Most of the facilities used in the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary is used for the public, it's a giant ski park now.

Here in Vancouver, we built the Olympic oval, which was used for the speed skating event. After a couple years, it was converted into a massive community centre and multi sport’s facility complete with ice rinks, basketball courts, multi purpose courts, and a climbing gym. It really was a great way to turn and unused venue into something that the community can thrive off of.

IM FAMOUS🥳🥳🥳

Actually, when Salt Lake City hosted the Olympics in 2002, between ticket sales, hotels, and souvenirs, we made about 59 million. As of 2024, all of the venues built for the Olympics are still in use. And Salt Lake City was just chosen to host the Olympics again in 2034!

We had the winter Olympics in Utah in the early 2000s. We've maintained a good amount of the infrastructure and now we're set to host again in 2034

In 1996 Atlanta turned the track and field stadium into the Braves stadium and used it for 2 decades. And now it’s the football stadium for Georgia State University.
