How to Fight off Ground & Pound Attacks in a Street Fight

This week we take a break from Wing Chun to look at how to defend against punches to your face when you’ve been thrown to the ground. We cover a few key BJJ concepts on how to fight off your back in self defence. These ideas are taken from Brazilian Jiu Jitsu’s (BJJ) well know and tested Self Defence training, but these ideas are universal and will help anyone defend themselves on the ground. We also examine why you should not use Wing Chun techniques, but stick too simple concepts taken from BJJ but also tested in MMA.

The first part of the video introduces the idea of making space by creating barriers for your self defence. We discuss the feet as the first line of defence, followed by the knees and then hands. It is important to fight on the ground with these concepts in mind.

Part two of the video introduces the idea of the ‘Sling Shot’, where you use the retreat of your attacker against them to make space to stand up. Since the ultimate goal is to stand up when you’ve been thrown to the ground. Then you have to make space to do so. We use the up kick to the face of the attacker to force him to pull away, and then only then do we use a technical stand up technique taken from BJJ.

The last part to the video examines why you do not use Wing Chun hand techniques in ground fighting. Simply because these ideas were not designed or intended for ground fighting, but also they extend your arms too far away from the body. Extending your arms away leaves them vulnerable for arm locks.

We have lots more videos on how to fight with Wing Chun. Please visit our channel. Better yet feel free to leave a comment or a suggestion of what you would like us to film for you. It does not have to be about Wing Chun it can be about any subject related to fighting, how to fight, Wing Chun techniques, or even Wing Chun vs other styles of martial arts. We are happy to pass on our knowledge and experience free of charge.

I've mentioned it before, but It's refreshing to see an instructor show the weaknesses of their chosen art, and why. This is where we ALL start to learn! Good job Sifu!

Great video mate, really !

Very useful information about BJJ for more real situations, and basic ideas for people who aren’t trained in it.
I personally don’t train any ground-grappling style (a bit of stand up grappling though) and I’m mostly a striking guy.

In my humble opinion, the ground is the worst place to be on the street, and thus extensively training ground fighting is pretty low on my lists of priorities.

But I always said that if the really useful thing I could get from BJJ is how to deal if I get to the ground (against my will), how to prevent someone from getting on top of me and how to get back up. This video covers exactly that.

Also, what a smile !

I have watched 6 of your videos now, and the information presented is the most practical and intelligent Wing Chun I have encountered. I have boxed and trained wingchun to a good level for over 6 years each, and have made a study of martial arts and real world self defense, and i'm very impressed. The only place i would hold a differing view is the use of tan sau or another form of block against a hook/haymaker, even if it's only utilised as a cover. In my experience in full contact sparring, unless i can jam it at the punces infancy (on the bicep) I find i either need to triangulate ( Thai boxing cover) or clinch to protect my head. I know how hard i can throw a hook and i just don't see anyones tansau unless they are very big stopping it. I would love your opinion, or if you could point me to a video addressing this. I wish you had a school in New Zealand, I would be there! :) Cheers

some great advise. as an experienced Muay Thai fighter and grappler, MMA trainer, I would suggest studying up on butterfly guard especially sweeps. these days closed guard is gone. it's to restricted and as you pointed out better for the top guy. hip escapes are much more abundant from butterfly and knee shield guards. even half guard is more attack these days. just some friendly advice and keep up the great work. happy grappling.

Thankyou for the reply. I apologise I am having trouble with my youtube account, which won't let me reply to your reply directly. I will check out that video, and continue to watch. For what it's worth, i'd love to see the sparring ( sport) applications in a live sparring context, maybe have a breakdown showing where ideas and principles have been used. It would be a nice point of difference, and a clear example of wing chun working under full force full speed conditions. As a viewer the self defense applications although tactically different are easier to accept and be recognised as functional when the method can be performed under sporting conditions ( which yours clearly can) At the end of the day it's all just a game even a street fight, it's the context, STAKES and objectives that change. Thanks again, keep up the great work. David

I was thinking sparring against boxing ( Some of your guys look like competent boxers) They have gloves ) 16 ounce and have the wingchun side with open grip gloves. It doesn't need to be full sparring, just full contact drills of wingchun seeking a bridge or following the jab back in. Any way just an idea :) Compartmentalising drills at full speed full force. So Wingchun guys get a full contact reference experience against western style punches. Anyway just an idea

I saw a guy attempt to defend himself with this three point of distance defense in St. Louis and the attacker just pounded him square in his testicles then pounded his face to a bloody pulp.
