Rising rents are always a concern in the city. Tenants have some protections in rent controlled or stabilized apartments. But there’s a lot of people living in fear of a big jump in the rent year after year.

This is why its important not to get too comfortable, look into buying your own home instead of paying someone’s mortgage

Someone mentioned these people were renting out there places at $200 a night on Airbnb. I believe it too. I'm in Memphis TN and many people are renting several apartments and furnishing them and renting them out at double and triple the rate on Airbnb and now there are no vacancies. It's hard to find an apartment anywhere and the budget motels are filling up with families.

This is why I would never sign up to these housing programs. Always had the feeling the low rent was tied to the tax breaks that the buildings gets. If the tax breaks go bye bye. So does the lower rent rate. This is going to continue for many more income based affordable housing as the years. Go by.

When inflation rises, so does your rent. Thanks Deblasio, Cuomo and Biden.

It's crazy my rent went up during Covid. But I had no choice but pay it! It's not fair especially when I never missed a payment. And didn't qualify for the rent assistance program.

Even NYCHA is giving up on affordable housing. Management of Harlem River Houses is given over to a private company who is saying that they are doing all kinds of work to the buildings but doesn't say how much it will affect the rent the renters have to pay. Does NYCHA care?

It's happening in Philadelphia where even tho there is a moratorium on evictions landlords are making living in their apartments a nightmare by no repairs & increasing the rent so basically forcing tenants to move out!
My big question I keep asking & not getting an answer for is this....
I see more & more apartment buildings being built which of course will have high rents, whom do these owners expect to rent to?
They want the money so I doublt they will go thru any housing service as most landlords want to run things their way!
All these poor tenants that are becoming homeless can't even afford the rents where they were otherwise they wouldn't have become homeless so where are they going to live?

These upper middle class tenants are crying poverty when it comes to paying rent, but at the same time are booking AirBnB customers at $200 per night to stay in their living room.

Why rent forever like that? One man has been a renter for 30 yrs. Anyone should know that rents GO UP. all the time.

10% every year? This is supposed to be a tax credit building. That is not right. It is supposed to be like rent stabilization, which currently is no more than 2% every one or two years.

This is what happens when you turned your noses up at those who wasn’t in your income backer. Now they’re facing what low income households go through.

That’s what happened when politicians are invisible to protect their constituents. That’s what happened when voters voted a doesn’t care politicians.

This pandemic has bought out the worst case of greed. People are going homeless. Hungry. If our government can send millions 2 other countries. Y can't we get recurring monthly stimulus checks? That would help. All these politicans r rich and wealthy. They don't know how life is 2 b poor....The middle class is in hurting...

This is all tied into the "free stuff" that is promised to you by your politicians... free sounds beautiful, but in reality, in order for them to be able to provide the "free stuff" SOMEONE has to pay... that someone is US, the working citizens end up paying for it by having all of our taxes and expenses increased...

Just evict all the non payers, and then all the apartments will be available. Flood the market and lower the price. Oh wait. Big Politicians paid by big landlords don't want that, it'll ruin their income.

Just move Upstate or to PA where it is cheaper and you can find some walkable areas with some amenities.

Why should people who live in market rate housing and no protections have sympathy for them? If you're not working to solve the problem of affordability in the city as a whole, then you're just looking after your own self-interest. That's fine, but be honest about it.
