Great League Teams

Master League Teams

Pokemon Go announced their new season GO Battle League: HIdden Gems. With this we saw a ton of move updates including buffs to walrein, dunsparce, alolan sandslash, clefable, emolga, and others with a nerf to trevenant.

This week is master league open and retro cup. Master League open means XL pokemon and legendary pokemon. Retro Cup is a 1500CP, great league, with no steel, dark, or fairy pokemon.

XL candies are a must if you want to compete in the great league, ultra league, or master league. In this video I go over all the ways to get XL candies and tips and tricks for getting XL candy faster.

The implementation of XL candies is one of the worst things they've done in this game. A new player picking up the game for the first time can barely get enough regular candy for a lot of Pokemon. Getting 296 XLs to max out a Lickitung or Medicham? It's ridiculous. They won't even have a decent selection of Mega Pokemon to use for many months, perhaps even years. And the worst part is that so many meta-relevant Pokemon require XLs, especially when specialty cups come around. Sableye, Grimer, and Medicham are prime examples. In UL, you have Pokemon like G-Fisk, Jellicent, Registeel, Dubwool, Pidgeot, Drapion and Scrafty. Even non-XL Pokemon like Gliscor in the UL require hundreds of candy and are extremely limited in their availability. Wait, you want to run a common starter Pokemon like Charizard? Better cough up your only 2 ETMs that you earned last season because we aren't going to let you get a CD move for the anniversary event like last year. And don't even get me started on ML. How many players picking up the game today will be able to max out a Dragonite or Excadrill anytime soon, let alone a single legendary? Literally zero of them, especially seeing as Dratini CD Classic has come and gone. Even in Little Cup, a cup where THE MAX CP IS 500, you have an XL Pokemon like Bronzor dominating the meta. It's insanity.

I would get it if you needed, say, 100 XLs to max a Pokemon. Or maybe if the XL conversion rate was 20 -> 1 instead of the 100 -> 1 it is right now. That would be attainable. It would be a grind, but at least you could do it reliably. The end goal would be in sight. However, as a player who has been doing PvP since the level 31 XL change last summer, I have only a handful of Pokemon I can max out, most of which are from Community Days, and I can't even do ML which is what I would build them for (Haxorous, Dragonite). I have hit Expert every season and Legend once, only playing 1500 and 500 CP cups. It sucks. I want to compete in UL. I want to try out ML. But I can't do those things and be competitive. Plus, I have a life outside the game, so I don't grind every event as much as I'd like.

Sorry for cluttering up the comments with this rant, but whatever. The XL system needs to be changed.

ETA: I am a FTP player like Dan. I pay for Go Fest/Regional Tour tickets at most, never bought coins. I follow all the strategies he outlined. However, everything Dan as built up has been done over the course of many years, through dozens of events and spotlight hours and CDs. The point of my comment is to highlight the nearly insurmountable task faced by new (or even just more casual) players.

I recommend taking the photo and doing the playing before the berries because when you’re teetering between single hearts, and double hearts, the points register first so you get double heart feeding

This isn't the most ethical way to get legendary or mythical XL, but it's not Defit. What I've done is amassed a bunch of poffins from doing AR tasks. Then, on nights where I don't need my phone charging, usually weekends, I throw a legendary on as a buddy, give it a poffin, throw it on the rocker. Then, hopefully, I wake up to an extra 2 or 3 XL. It's not the best way, but I've gotten my Meloetta up to the 50 xl mark with it over the past few months.

Here's my mega strategy:
Make sure you have 3 of each mega built to mega level 3 UNLESS the type combo is covered by another mega, in which case only 3 combined. For example, I only have 1 Mega Galalie because Ice alone is covered by Mega Abomisnow. Similarly, I only am building 1 Mega Medicham because Mega Gallade will eventually come out with the same type combo and it is superior in every way to mega medi. However, they need to be separate combos, so I still build 3 Swamperts and 3 Gyarados' because they are different combos (Water/Ground vs Water/Dark). By having 3 of each at level 3, you can get 1 free mega per day of whatever type combo works best for an event (Like Mega Houndoom worked perfectly for the Dark Flames event, so having 3 at mega level 3 gives you 8 hours each day of boosted candy/xl of all the event spawns).

I really appreciate the break down, I had known about the excite levels, but not someone who actually showed me through the whole process.
Also I like the mega evolution combined with the "use pinaps for all your grinds" together.

I believe when u battle ur buddy, u can fight the leaders in stead of wasting a pvp set. But idk if u can leave immediately, will try now lol

Nice summary - other pro-tip is to always catch stage 2 or 3 since it's guaranteed XL (and obviously more dust)

Dan, did you know that it takes 3, 500 KM of walking to max out a legendary pokemon? Yeah- thats quite a few. You won't get there with legs of flesh- You will require the *strength and certainty of steel.* There are... alternative methods of generating PoGo steps, but those are not tales which the Jedi would tell you. The information is but a google search away...

(Hint: Going on a walk with just PoGo running on your phone doesn't give you the distance you're covering IRL 1:1 in the game. You have to use Google Fit to track your activity and enable adventure sync to make sure you end up getting every kilometer of motion as in game distance. But google fit calculates how "far" you've traveled based on how many times it detects your phone shaking when set to running, or raw distance traveled via gps when biking... Do with this information what you will.)

I've been walking Solgaleo and dumping all my rare XL candy into it. The excited buddy to make it 10km instead of 20 is huge. I usually just use a poffin because I'm lazy haha. I got it to level 49 thanks to the GBL XL rare candies so only 40 more XLs to go..

I was finally able to get all the +350 XLs I needed for my A9 for UL 🎉, now I need to work on Medi, Licki, Dusclops for GL and Gyarados for ML 😅

I don't mind not having every pokemon in great and ultra leauge because I don't have the xl's, but I absolutely mind them removing level 40 classic leauges because that is a whole new meta, basically a new cup.

Lickitung is 3k now though is that new? Also if your buddy is excited to you get a garusnteed xl candy when hitting the distance for candies? Or Pokémon lvl still affect the xp candy yield somehow?

What about Mythicals like Zarude and Meloetta or extremely rare Legendaries like Solgaleo? I'm simply walking them and using Rare Candy XL because I can always catch or raid everything else for XL.

Something that has been helpful for me has been tagging the Pokemon that can mega evolve with either "Mega" or "Mega - Tier 3" labels so I can 1) check every day which Pokemon are ready to mega evolve and 2) know which Pokemon I've already maxed to Tier 3 and don't need to check anymore.
