The Sultanates of Deccan were five medieval Muslim highly cultured kingdoms with a rich artistic heritage arose at the end of 15th century in the Deccan plateau, central-southern India.
The five sultanates were the ones of Bijapur, Golconda, Ahmednagar, Bidar and Berar.
They originated from the collapse of the Bahmani sultanate, and existed between 1490 when the sultanates of Ahmednagar, Bedar and Bijapur got independent, until 1686 and 1687, when the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb conquered the last two, respectively the ones of Bijapur and Golconda.

In the 16th and 17th centuries, these sultanates became cosmopolitan centers where different ideas, languages, religions, artistic styles and populations, merged.
Under the patronage of the dynasties that ruled these kingdoms, all of foreign origin but with strong cultural and blood ties with the local populations, foreign influences—notably from Iran, Turkey, eastern Africa, and Europe—combined with ancient and prevailing Indian traditions created a distinctive Indo-Islamic art and culture that came to be known as the Deccani.
