Throughout centuries of warfare, Russia has displayed consistent wartime strategies that have endured through the Tsars, the Soviets, and even into the present day. Historically, Russia is able to absorb early, often devastating losses, through a seemingly endless supply of soldiers. As war prolongs, Russia adapts, persists, and nearly always overwhelms their enemy.

Lets not forget that US provided massive materials and equipment to Russia during WW2 and allies tied up substantial amounts of German army in Africa, Italy, France, and the Netherlands and also in Germany that contributed to the Russian victories during the war. This is definitely not the case in Russian war in Ukraine in 2023.

Modern Russia is not Imperial Russia or the USSR; both of which included Ukraine. I think the sectarian minorities (including Ukranians) grew tired of being the meat shields for Moscow over the centuries. With Russia's current policies in place, it will inevitably fracture even more.

They don't have as many people and don't replace them the way they used to.

I was with you right up to the end. Taiwan is of vital strategic importance to the West. Only when Taiwan is secure in it's defence from an ever more bellicose CCP should we think to aid a massively corrupt, democracy suspended Ukraine. It is always nice to attrite Russia but not at the expense of Taiwan. Also the National Debt. It is long past time to start paying that down.

Mediazona, with the BBC, counts only 38, 261 Russian deaths from the SMO as of December 1, 2023. Their methodology is solid, based on casualties corroborated by publicly available data, including social media posts by family members, local media coverage (such as obituaries) and official statements from local authorities. They estimate the actual death toll is significantly higher, at 47, 000, which is far lower the numbers originating from the highly suspect source, the Ukrainian general staff, which has reason to exaggerate.

Mediazona and the BBC do not support a similar study of Ukrainian casualties and the Ukro government strictly forbids dissemination of such information just as it forbids the recording of successful strikes of Russian missiles, drones and artillery, but it is widely believed their death toll is north of 500, 000, which is reasonable given the 10 to one artillery advantage and the disastrous strategy of pushing offensives with degraded air defense and air forces and artillery shortages, for PR.

Ukraine has reached the limit of its mobilization potential, has bruited the idea of drafting 17 to 70 year olds and getting the EU to force Ukrainians who left the country to be sent to the front. All Russia wanted was for Ukraine to be neutral and to protect the historical Russian peoples from the Maidan coup government’s oppression. This war could have ended early with the April 2022 Istanbul agreement or ea😢with faithful adherence to the Minsk 2 accords, but the west wanted to weaken and regime change Russia. What Ukraine needs is to capitulate.

How does the crumbling Russian society/demographics play into your calculus? Are there enough Russians to occupy the land in a potential post-war Ukraine?

I agree but more importantly we need to fix our asylum process and secure our border.
