$30 over a year is probably only $300 or $400 over the life a vehicle. It'll easily cost you more in wear on parts. A starter, which is most likely to wear out, would cost you an easy $300 or $400 to replace, and the wear and tear on parts doesn't end there. I'm all for saving fuel, but there are better ways.

You forgot to say “rev up your engines” at the beginning

What about your starter? Wouldn't it wear out your starter if you're constantly restarting it

Clearly you don’t live in a cold climate. Ha. I’ll continue to use my command start to warm my truck on those balmy -30 days.

You left off the most important thing. Most cars do not have an oil cooler, relying primarily on air flow around the oil pan and engine. An idling car has very little air flowing around the engine and oil pan which causes oil temperatures to rise. This will shorten the life of your oil, and could possibly lead to premature wear of your engine.

Idk much about cars but i drive my brother to school, if I don't turn the car on at least 5 mins if i try to drive it doesn't start it runs and stops 🤷🏻‍♂️ also if its cold if it's not on the heater doesn't turn on, so what am i supposed to do? Turn it on when my brother with asthma gets in the car and crash cus it won't run probably ?

Maybe quit eating McDonald’s and that will improve the quality of your lungs, heart, brain, & digestive system.

Very well said. Many object because it’s a small amount of savings while running AC because of heat, a condition exaggerated by emissions, thus creating more heat. Others say wear/tear on equipment. Actually, starters and engine parts are made to take the start/stop cycles. Using synthetic blend and synthetic motor oils as all car manufacturers recommend is extra protection. At 75 yrs of age I cannot recall having to replace starters on US or other brands. A hybrid stop/start system saves on fuel along with other features. This does work saving more $$ than $35/$40 a year. Chatting with neighbors, checking phone, waiting on someone, etc. are all wasteful habits. BTW, a 20 year old Audi TT has original starter. Thanks

*While carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas might be harmful in the long run, carbon monoxide is a harmful pollutant that can cause serious injury. It blocks oxygen from reaching the blood, and can be fatal in high concentrations. It is notably the main pollutant in automobile exhaust gases.

You give an example of idling for 12 minutes saying that takes enough gas to travel 24 miles but then you say it uses .156 gallons of gas per hour for idling. I don’t think that math adds up.

The comments section is pretty hilarious today.

Sure, can you ask all other drivers in my metro area to stay off the roads when I have to go and return from work. And remove all traffic lights.
I’ll get home much faster and help the environment!

Wow, can't believe people can't even agree on better Air quality just bc the first thing they hear was "Environmental Health".

I’ve heard a car uses a half gallon of fuel every hour. Anyway, mfr says warm up the turbo engine before operating. About two minutes should do it in this warm climate here. Fortunately, remote start makes it easy to get it going before you even get in. 🙋🏼‍♂️

So apparently if you don’t idle your car for 12 minutes you could drive another 24 miles. But also if you idle your car for an hour it only burns 0.15 gallons.

So using some math, 12 minutes would use 0.03 gallons. If your car can go 24 miles using 0.03 gallons you’d have a car with 800mpg...

Next time make sure your “facts and data” actually match up.

The obvious issue with his premise, is the wear-out of components involved in turning off and on an engine. A prius has an ev button, which prevents undue wear and tear, i suppose. Thanks, though for an interesting video.

Well in that case auto makers needs to make hybrid vehicles cheaper so majority can own one. It'll solve that problem.
