"Then you jump of a brigde as you should" caught me of guard 😅

That's if the goal was just to live forever. Liches are just as interested in becoming powerful.

Forget immortality. Liches get a lair action where they regain a spell slot every round determined by a d8. That averages to an 8th-level spell every 48 seconds. 1, 800 8th-level spells a day, and as many of each level of spell below that to boot. Still only one 9th-level spell slot a day (barring Simulacrum), but everything else comes flooding back. A lich should not be doing turning to undeath for immortality, he should be doing it to get spells faster than he can cast them. A lich, as long as he stays in his lair, is hundreds of times more powerful than a 20th-level Wizard in basically any context except combat.

Clone still put you at the risk of having your soul stolen when you are killed, denying your attempt to revive

-How old are you?
-I'm 23
-How long have you been 23?
-About 6 months?
-How many times have you been 23?
- I don't know, i think around 40 times now. It gets hard to remember after a while

Does he heard about mage war? I mean that’s literally why cloning was deemed unreliable. One mistake and there is a bunch of you and they all think that they are you.

In the lore of 5e the forgotten realms the clone spell was developed relatively recently by Manshoon and his further tampering with the spell resulted in multiple clones all believing that they are the original. So canonically it's a newer spell known only to a small handful of wizards.

I believe this comes off the concept that souls do indeed have a bit of a "lifeforce" in and of themselves, in that eventually even a soul can't persevere through new bodies, as it too cannot remain on the mortal plane, which is why it passes on eventually.

Meanwhile Manshun who make 40 clones and in the time of his death they all wake up with his personality:

1) as lich you are much more powerful wizard, than (almost) any race. You learn faster, don't have memory loss at all, don't need any needs so you don't have to interrupt yourself and much more
2) there is a philosophical dilemma: is it really you or a copy of your soul.
3) remember that on wizard, who created many copies of himself. Each copy though he is the original. (Can someone remind me of his name?)
Edited: Manshun
4)clone can be destroyed
5)spell is difficult to learn, many resources needed

The other aspect of lichdom is you're protected from accidental deaths, you'd need to keep a clone that's ten years younger than you forever in a closet somewhere, and make sure you keep it alive as well.

Meanwhile lich just has a stone in a jar somewhere.

And nevermind if you get a disease that the clone inherited. Or the clone doesn't want to cooperate.

Clones are much less secure than a phylactery. Clones might not even work without them being on the same plane, not to mention it takes 180 days until a new one is ready. Not to mention, phylacteries can use souls to boost power. At least in lore.

A Lich will not need to eat or sleep. So it's a wonderful thing if you have to finish your PhD Thesis about new uses of fireball and how they affect the material realm
