Thank you so much. I just finished my first year teaching and heard this term thrown around often, but no one was able to give me a straight answer that used friendly language. I understood everything in this video and it’s exactly what I needed

Usually my pride overrides my need for knowledge! However I did have a colleague a few years back who got quite indignant that I kept asking questions. At one point she laughed at me because I didn't know the difference between a subordinate clause and a dependent clause. I asked what she meant and she scoffed. "What kind of teacher doesn't know the difference?" I said I did a BSC so it didn't really come up... She laughed and said I should really know. My principal gave a quick explanation before moving on.

Of course, while I ask lots of questions, being laughed at and ignored was enough to get me to read up about it. I was the one that started structured literacy in my class and rolled out around the school. I also introduced The Writing Revolution to my principal and our school's attitude towards literacy has really changed. That old colleague moved on to another school.

I'm head of literacy at my school now. Structured Literacy is embedded in all our classrooms. However Learning Through Play is also present in our junior school. The children play while we pull out small groups (often tier 2 and 3) and teach them how to read, write and spell. Just because someone follows a Learning Through Play approach does not mean that they don't follow The Science of Reading. Play is just as important to a child as becoming literate.

This 'science of reading " has already been invented: its called "reading mastery " or a more advanced version "Corrective Reading " a well attablished, well researched program for 50 years.

You didn't talk about the other four components. Are there other videos with the other four?

As a teacher, I have to give your explanation a "D", because you spent most of video explaining how confused you were and not explaining the topic.

I don't neccisarily think explicit phonics instructions, memorization of irregular words, and exposure to a variety of high interest self selected text are mutually exclusive. I belive a high performing classroom provides all of this daily while differentiating for the needs of each unique learner.

I'm hearing a lot of anecdotal evidence...and not a lot of science. Also, please include a list of your sources. Real science has both.
