In this video, we’re going to talk about the best vegan source of vitamin B12.

There are three primary sources of B12 for vegans.
1. Nori (red algae)
2. Chlorella
3. Spirulina

There are two types of B12. There’s a pseudo B12 (B12 analog) and real B12. B12 analog is similar in chemistry to B12, but not similar in function. So if an algae has large amounts of pseudo B12, it can block real B12. In turn, this can cause a serious deficiency.

Unless you’re taking B12 supplements, I do not recommend that you try to get all of your dietary B12 from nori or spirulina.

However, chlorella does contain a significant amount of real B12. This is the best source of vitamin B12 for vegans.

You need about 6 tablets or one teaspoon of chlorella twice per day.

One analysis of 19 dried chlorella supplements found B12 levels varied from an insignificant less than 0.1mcg to 415mcg per 100 grams. A teaspoon is about 5 grams so you'd have to be eating 20 teaspoons worth to get these levels.11 Nov 202

Not Vegan but I've done around 15-20 grams of Spirulina powder most days for years now, usually in the morning with Green juice and water. Love it, that and usually protein from Goat Keifer or a shake plus some Coconut Manna keeps me going 5am--> lunch. I'm not an early riser by nature so the short quick nature is a godsend👍

Have done chlorella powder as well off and on but that taste is so much more extreme compared to a *good* Spirulina like Nutrex..

I been taking 25g of chlorella a day for 3 months now ! The stuff is amazing, the first month was hard as I was on detox and felt tied and lethargic but I think it has done it's good as now mood swings or Brian fog has completely gone and for some reason I am dreaming like every nite and remembering them.
But guys if you get chorella make sure it's made from Taiwan ! Yes more expensive but it's worth its for many

Good stuff to know... I take 1000 mg of Chlorella, daily, but I also take a supplement of B Complex as well as other supplements that contain B 12... So I think I have that base covered. I also take Seaweed and make Miso soup, mainly for the Iodine. Great little video :-)

Dr. Berg,
Thank you for all the videos and info you bring to us all. It has changed my life for the better.
I was wondering if you could do a video about Chlorella if you haven't already. I am very interested in Chlorella as I am sure many of your viewers are as well. Only if you think it is of value?
Thanks, Eric S.

Yes, I only discovered that spirulina is predominantly pseudo-B12 recently, after 3 months of usage! I am awaiting the delivery a B12 supplement, but may experiment with chlorella.

Thank you for mentioning!

Is there a reason the B12 is not listed on the nutritional label of chlorella?? Does it depend upon the strain? how it is cultivated?, etc..
