How we plant out leeks - to get extra long white stems

Roger is back in the school garden planing out leek seedlings.
Here is Wales we love Leeks - they are a welsh emblem, and 'our national vegetable' - but how can you encourage an extra long white base of the stem?
Rogers shows us 2 important factors

1 - Planting the seedlings deep into the soil at the bottom of a special hole, so that much of the stem is buried beneath the soil.
2 - Covering the base of the stem above ground level using a toilet roll.

Leeks are usually ready for harvesting in late autumn and winter so can be planted out quite late in the spring or even early summer, it helps if the seedlings are quite large with 'pencil thick' stems to help them establish in the extra deep holes.
It usually best to plant Leeks on soil that has not been used to grow Leeks (or other Onion family plants) for at least 2 years to reduce the risk of disease.
Now get out there and plants some Leeks and make some Leeks and Potato soup - and make sure you support Wales in the Rugby!
Diolch!

Thanks

Ha! Fantastic!! Funny I thought about putting loo rolls around mine but wondered if it was too crazy. Seems like I'm not alone with this idea.

You’ve spelt ideal or ideally wrong. Also in your comment you had a typo “oif” too. Good video though, I’ve just planted mine out too, first time I’ve tried to grow leeks so fingers crossed.
