This was great fun! Next one should be a VH update tier list

What mending is, it's a band-aid for the outdated level system. That's why Iskal had the perspective shift; 'cuz he realized that without it, we're stuck with something even worse.

I think something important to note about 1.8 is the inclusion of Armor Stands, which essentially revolutionized the technical side of the game.

As much as 1.13's phantoms sucked, I think it's arguably the most important of the modern style updates. The changes were absolutely vital for the minecraft revival back around 2019

I fully expect Iskall to put 1.8 on E tier purely because of diorite

1.13 is S+ tier without a doubt, because it was "the flattening". The new command system, along with data packs, is such a monumental change that completely reshaped the ability to make custom content. I cannot express just how revolutionary it was. No update can match its significance, in my opinion.

About Beta 1.4, being disappointed with wolves is more common than you think. Remember a mod called "Better than wolves"?

People forget that 1.17 and by extension 1.18 had a lot of their development time during the worst parts of the pandemic, it definitely screwed with how the Deep Dark and related features were unevenly released.

I feel like mending in 1.9 was fine because it was extremely late-game. Mending books were super hard to get. 1.14 was the problem, because they trivialized the what should have been a hyper-lategame accomplishment.

A few key things that I would like to point out for some updates, and this is a bit of a read:

- *1.12* introduced a LOT of advancements, most notably How Did We Get Here (have every Survival mode effect on you at the same time). This was rough because either roses were not introduced until 1.14 by having a mob die to the Wither, so you would have to get hit by a Wither Skeleton.
- *1.14* introduced wither roses, which made HDWGH easier to perform. In addition, the player’s hit box went down to 1.5 blocks when sneaking and the “hydraulic press, ” which allowed players to crawl through 1x1 tunnels. The press could be a 1.13 thing, but I remember Jordan covering that in a 1.14 video.
- *1.17* also had the infamous mob vote where we would’ve had the Iceologer (Chillager), but thanks to Dream (I say this as a joke bc I know think he wasn’t the prime reason), we ended up getting glow squids, which I’m surprised Jordan did NOT call that out and put that as F tier and put 1.8 in E or D.
- *1.20* made the ability to collect diamonds more viable because of ONE thing: smithing templates. These have the ability to design our armor, but more importantly, if you wanted to go from Diamond to netherite, you needed a netherite upgrade template, and duplicating those required 7 diamonds. Same can be said with the armor trims. So this kind of helps Iskall’s point of “searching for more diamonds, ” but the only problem was diamond generation from 1.18 to present is poor compared to before. I’ll note that in 1.16 and 1.17, people found guaranteed methods of finding diamonds and I think that’s what Mojang and Microsoft were trying to move away from. With the new experimental update (1.20.2), they made finding exposed diamond ores more rewarding, and I’m happy with that.
The *ONE* addition that they made, and I feel like I have a strong feeling about this, was Smithing With Style. This, right here and in my opinion, is the new hardest advancement because of the RNG aspect of finding certain trims. I have a bit of a strong passion about this because of HDWGH, which takes preparation and proper timing and attention to what effects you have, so to see it get replaced as the hardest advancement just stinks, but those are my two cents.

Sorry for the long read, but I needed to point out some key things that were not discussed.

1.8 definitely needs more love. People have already commented on armor stands and command changes, but people forget those times when every door was an oak door and every fence was an oak fence.

boy that aged well

1.8 also added /execute which is pretty much the most important command of all time for map makers. 1.13 did end up reworking it to make it even more useful.

I agree about everything except the 1.18 ranking. The absolute awe when you see the new caves and world generation and how the world expanded into something so magnificent was amazing. Worth the wait I would say

25:03 The 1.8 update made sheep drop their meat, and made sponges obtainable in survival finally!!
So it has to be at least A tear!

7:35 wow this aged really well seeing that wolves now CAN wear armor if the armadillo wins the mob vote 😂

The additional discussion of history that gets injected into this conversation is, for me (a relative newbie who started in 1.16), fascinating to hear about.

I personally would put 1.16 and CavenCliff part 2 in S tier just because they changed the game SO fundamentally and so wonderfully. But then I'd drop part 1 of CnC into C tier. It had nice stuff but it was... lacking in terms of the way it made me feel and how mojang handled the announcement.
