TIMESTAMPS IN THE DESCRIPTION

FAQ:

Q: Weren't the new caves added in 1.18, not 1.17?
A: Yeah, ima be honest, I kinda fumbled on that one, instead of "Best of 1.17 and 1.18", it was more like "Best of Caves" and "Best of Cliffs". The snapshots in between the two updates made it hard to determine which addition belonged to which update.

Q: What factors are being considered to choose the best "thing"?
A: Depends honestly, some of them are chosen because they have a lot of relevance in speedrunning/beating the game, others are just iconic features that make Minecraft what it is, and some of them are just because "I like it". There's really no ranking here, it's just that out of the features added in each of these updates, I think that these are the ones that stand out to me in a good way

He forgot that in 1.13 we have a swimming animation. We couldn't swim fast before 1.13 and it was a pain. But the update was very helpful. Also you get to go through a 1 block gap!

The other great thing about enchantments requiring lapis is that now doing a max-level enchant doesn't eat all of your 30 levels, it just takes 3 but requires you to be level 30.

My god how the time flew. I remember 1.8 coming out like it was yesterday and am still in the mindset of 1.9 being brand new.

You also forgot the fact that nametags stop mobs despawning, which massively helps farms and moving mobs

One change that always get buried under the bigger changes, but was absolutely huge in my opinion is the changes made to boats. They used to be absolutely horrible, but now they actually function as boats. They don't break on impact with literally anything anymore and if you do decide to break it, you actually get the boat back instead of some planks and sticks. 10/10

1.15 is underrated. The bug fixes were the best part of it.

I feel like armor stands shoulda definitely won 1.8 because of how much they did for people who worked with command blocks and custom maps.
Also honey was definitely underrated because since they act like slime blocks that don’t stick to other slime blocks it was huge for anyone who likes redstone.

The new cave generation wasn't added in 1.17, it was added in 1.18. 1.17 just introduced the items and the mobs.

I have a theory. The Nether wasn’t always a fiery hellscape. It was like lush caves. But then the piglins found Pigstep. When they played it, it was so fire, it turned the dimension into hell.

The best thing about 1.3 will always be the "Open to LAN" button to me. Playing in the same virtual space as my siblings from different computers was once a rare commodity!

honestly, 1.11 was a very tricky choice to make because it implemented two very useful features: shulker boxes (mentioned in the video) and rocket boosting, a much easier was of using the elytra to travel long distances instead of punch bow.

Personally, my favorite feature of 1.12 is items in the crafting grid going directly to your inventory when you close the crafting interface.

My favorite part of 1.18 was The Increase of the height of the world from height limit being from Y 256 to Y 319 and minimal height being from Y0 to Y -64

8:02 They do also have a useful functional purpose, stopping mobs from despawning.

My picks:
1.0: Brewing (Potion is a fun addition)
1.1: Superflat (Making creative builds easier)
1.2: Jungle biome
1.3: Ender chest
1.4: Same as you
1.5: Same as you
1.6: Donkey (Act as an early game/pre 1.11 shulker box)
1.7: Same as you
1.8: Ocean monument
1.9: Shield
1.10: Magma block (For gold farm)
1.11: Same as you
1.12: Concrete blocks
1.13: Trident (1. Trident killer, op mob grinder for bedrock, 2. Easy way to get mob head once you get channeling)
1.14: Trading rework
1.15: Honey blocks (For redstone nerds)
1.16: Warped forest (1. Getting ender pearl from enderman if you hate bartering, 2. Warped woods)
1.17: Pointed dripstone (For infinite lava source)
1.18: Cave generation
1.19: Same as you
1.20: Same as you

Extra info on things you mentioned that I expected to be mentioned:

You can use iron golems for automatic iron
You can use haste 2 from beacons to instant mine stone
You can use a nametag on an endermite to prevent it from despawning, making enderman farms possible

I'd argue honey blocks were definitely the best feature of 1.15 since it revolutionized slimestone
Also, the main reason why 1.15 appears to be so lackluster was the amount of fixed bugs, performance improvements, and Bedrock parity changes

As an honorable mention for Release 1.3 (1.3.1 in specific), it added the creative menu we all know and love today, with life saving categories instead of the jumbled mess of 1.2 and prior. Still remember spending ages trying to find a block instead of just searching it or looking it in a category of blocks.

4:03 I love the barely noticeable detail of the no longer alive snow golem. You just carry on talking and it’s hilarious.

I think I started playing Minecraft since a little before the 1.12 update, and when 1.12 came, the ability to have beds that were not red was an amazing discovery to me
