One of the most haunting opening sections in a documentary I’ve ever seen.

Man, these guys were tough bastards back then. My favorite quote that inspires me to keep going "...cause if you survive, you will survive anything..."

The sacrifice of these men goes beyong anything ive ever seen, not even movies can make it just... they shall never hrow old..

What makes this more sadder is that those who survived will obviously be left badly traumatised for the rest of their lives.

They might not sound like it, but deep down the men sharing their experiences will never forget their friends & comrades who died, the trench conditions or the fact they suffered life changing wounds and faced death many times only to come out on top.

My Grandfathers grandfather; Albert Slatter, was a platoon leader with the 15th Battalion (48th Highlanders of Canada) Canadian Corps. He was wounded going over the top in 1917. His father; John Slatter, was the director of music for the 48th. He rejected an offer from John Phillip DeSousa to join his band, and instead opted to train military bands at CFB Borden in Ontario. I hope I get into my family’s regiment and can live up to my ancestors. Dileas gu brath!
