Most heartbreaking part of the documentary for me. The way the poor man’s voice cracks in the end is so raw and emotional. Reading it in a book just doesn’t give you the same feeling when you hear someone who actually did it tell a story about how he had to put a comrade out of his misery. I hope that they are both at peace wherever they are.

It’s so sad how he says “I had to. I had to shoot him.” As if he’s justifying to himself why he did it because of the terrible guilt he feels. What a terrible thing to experience.

If this was the actual guy speaking that put him out his misery I am literally crying, the shakiness in his voice, he did gods deed.

How on earth are you supposed to just resume 'normal' day to day life, upon returning home, having gone through something like this? Absolutely heartbreaking...

I would have thrown up if I witnessed something like that. These men were heroes

There are so few words that can thoroughly and accurately describe the sheer brutality of war. Even fewer for what this soldier and many more have either witnessed or committed. I hope and pray that people never forget the sacrifices these men, on either side of the war, had to make. Before the Great War, battle was something to be revered or sought after to be seen as a hero. War was glorified. These men went home broken, to family and friends that didn't fully comprehend any of it. If there is one thing I'm certain of about war, it's that only the dead have seen the true end of it. I just wish we could personally thank all of them for their service after they made the ultimate sacrifice.

I believe this to be the single best documentary that has ever been made. My Dad and I saw it in theaters when I was younger, and we both left changed. Just allowing WWI Veterans to speak, and tell their stories, is far better than any interpretation. History is important, and now that we unfortunately no longer have any WWI Veterans with us, this film is especially important. I still remember where I was when I heard that the last WWI Veteran had passed away. To the fallen, and thise who survived, and are now resting peacefully, rest easy, from Virginia. We, the free world, will take it from here.

The reality is that war doesn't care if a cause is just or not. It's always this horrible.
