I never thought I would love the storytelling and cinematics of a YouTube personal finances. But I do. I have just discovered your channel and I really like not only your the message but also how you shape it.

It is very hard to never shop. I have tried that, too, and I got depressed. I enjoy puzzles and video games, but I convinced myself that buying those was bad. In actuality, those things help me appreciate life.

I remember earning 5k a month and having no outgoings, no subscriotions, no bills nothing. 5 years have given me so much freedom and the ability to level up unbelievably. Stay Uncommon!

When you get hooked on the joy of spreadsheets and seeing the numbers in your savings accounts going up, there's no going back!

the main message of the video is that zero shopping will not make you less poor.
Do you agree?

This is a very good video, Tom - and the basic take away actually is to set up your budget (monthly/quarterly etc. expenses) in a spread sheet. Lots of people are not doing this, but as you say - it is step no. 1. When you can see the numbers on the screen you will inevitably start thinking/wondering/planning and thus be on the path to improve your finances 🙂

If you are lucky enough to have a wage where you can support yourself and still save 60% good for you but most people are working for $25 to $30 an hour which is considered a good wage in todays economy even though minimum wage would be over $20 an hour now if it had kept up with inflation so they can barely pay their rent, buy food, and maintain a vehicle to get back and forth to work with.

Thank you. Really enjoyed the vid. I aim to invest half what I earn each month, combo of main job and side hustle reselling. Got into crypto 4 years ago. While it is relatively 'unregulated', this is the best time...I don't consider it that much more risky than money in the bank at this point. Things are changing. You made a good point of diversifying where you allocate. Important to DYOR. If mainstream media run scare stories about it (or ignore it), I tend to think there's something worth looking into 😂

I understand and can relate with Tom about the drudgery and demands of the modern workplace. However, his statement that we work more today than people did in the past is not correct.
In the 1800’s and early 1900’s many jobs like logging, farming and factory jobs paid by the day. The work day was from sun up till sun down. And that was six days a week in many cases. Both my grandfathers were born around 1900 and both told me stories of jobs they held as young men that were daylight to dark. Especially during the Depression.

This is lovely, Tom. Loving the sheer artistry of your video as well as your thoughts. I agree about zero shopping - I love to have a coffee out, it feels free and inspirational and I love books and stationery too. My low income makes these things feel really special. Love that you keep up the behind-the-scenes vlog, always a favourite.

Great video and I also can't imagine a zero shopping lifestyle... Another funny thing that we share in common is that I too cut my own hair. In fact, I've never paid for a haircut in my life and have been doing it myself since I was ten. So when I do the math on 35 years of free haircuts, I can rationalize spending money on camera gear!

@TomScryleus Hi! I enjoy your videos! Keep them coming! I think it might be worth making a video about what work would have to be like for you to not consider it "wage slavery". Are there any conditions under which you would not consider a 9-5 office job, shift work or salaried position as "wage slavery?" Or is self-employment/passive income the only way to go?

I bought a kakeibo work book. It's great for those that don't love spreadsheets. I do an income, expenses and net worth review every month.
