Saw this live and this bit made me cry. It’s so well choreographed.

Very sad song, optimistic for the kids but depressing for adults as life isn’t that simple and the line referring to knowing the answers when it’s too late, really deep

people have been saying that Miss Honey's part is saying that she feels Trunchbull has trapped her and while that is true, I also thought about how maybe she is also singing it as a reflection on how she felt the same when she was a kid and then grew up to realize that life is much harder than she thought.

“When I grow up I will be strong enough to carry all the heavy things you have to haul around with you when you’re a grown up. And when I grow up, I will be brave enough to fight the creatures that you have to fight beneath the bed each night to be a grown up”

I feel those lyrics, and not everyone will ever truly understand them

why did this remind me so much of my school days, when we all sat in the playground about to finish elementary school and begin middle school, we all talked about how middle school will be different, how high school was right around the corner, what growing up will be like, talking about school dances, and dating, and all the questions we wanted to know the answers to, how we think being grown up means you can do whatever you want. now that we are all grown up we still dont know all the answers we wanted to know as kids, im not sure we will ever know honestly but thats the magic of being alive to be honest. if you have all the answers you loose your adventure

miss honey’s bit is to represent she still feels trapped as a little girl in miss trunchbull’s grasp, it makes me cry so hard as a victim of emotional abuse.

As a preschool teacher, all I could think about was “if these were my kinds on the swings at school I would be so fired”

This was my daughters end of year song ( from year 6) to secondary the whole year performed it.Oh dear the tears for all of them and the teachers!!! Then covid hit us all she is now doing her GCSEs but we always say we remember this song ( the school downloaded on to disc wow that does seem 10 years ago!) but it’s a lovely song for school leavers as yes they have all definitely grown up!

I just saw the musical in Madrid. I loved this number with the swings so much that it seemed to be over way too soon. It’s a weekday so the theater wasn’t full and yet this was the only number where people started clapping during the song instead of waiting for it to be over. It was when the little kids stood on the swings. It was very moving. This number and revolting children were my favorites.

I saw this musical when i was 10 on a class trip we were all reading this book as a class for story time and they booked us a trip to see this. It was amazing 👍😊 forever my childhood especially for kids like me at the time, who struggled to understand the crooked ways of adults and the emotional/verbal abuse they through at some of us. Roald dahl's book really spoke to me may this amazing authour rest in peace, both him and his amazing illustrator quentin blake who brought the story to life with his illustrations forever have my gratitude.❤The story taught me that just because your little does not mean your voice can't be heard!

Saw this at the 5th. Avenue theater in Seattle, row 2, so they are swinging out over you. Moved me, an adult male 63 YO to tears. If you haven't seen the new version of Matilda the musical its worth watching; a bit long; its further testimony against the old British school mean headmaster system as supertramp, pink floyd and others rightfully railed against.

I know most are talking about lines or something like that about this Song. But I really like the part they spin onto the ground using the Swings, it's just so smooth!

I feel really silly but I get a bit teary when I listen to this because I remember literally thinking this when I was a child! About how awesome it would be to be an adult and do whatever I wanted when I wanted. But of course adulthood isn’t like that and instead at times you find yourself longing for the innocence of childhood again instead.

Something my little sister pointed out earlier.
When Ms. Honey sings about fighting the creatures beneath the bed each night, she's referring to Trunchbull. I haven't been able to listen to this song the same again.

Don't grow up it's a trap and you can't go back to where you used to be.
