Ben Hogan's Hip Turn is THE BEST KEPT SECRET of the Golf Swing

Ben Hogan's hip turn in the golf swing is rarely discussed in golf swing instruction today but it remains to be one of the most valuable golf swing pieces that you need to know to be good at golf (the best kept secret of the golf swing). Ben Hogan's golf swing is often interpreted literally as "he wrote what he actually did". In reality, Ben Hogan wrote what he "felt". This leads to a lot of misconceptions about what he actually did in the golf swing. These golf swing misconceptions create problems for golfers looking to improve their golf games.

This episode looks at Ben Hogan's hips and how you can use his ACTUAL hip motion to improve your golf swing. To quote Happy Gilmore when talking about the golf swing, "It's all in the hips". This advice reigns true and there's a reason why Ben Hogan viewed the hips as the part of the golf swing that makes the golf swing AUTOMATIC. When you look at exactly how the hips work in the golf swing you will begin to see how Ben Hogan really felt and also understand the golf swing on a much deeper level. This episode will take your golf game to the next level.

I am Tom Saguto, PGA Member and founder of SagutoGolf. Thank you for visiting my instructional page where you can find how to get on the fast track to improving your golfing abilities. Whether you are a seasoned golfing veteran looking for a quick swing tune-up after an on-course emergency, or a beginner just looking to get the most out of your golfing experience, I am here to help you achieve your golfing goals.

My mission as your swing doctor is simple, to help you maximize your enjoyment in game of golf. Because, let’s face it, golf is a hard game.

My philosophy is wholly based on the student having a fun, meaningful experience in a frustrating and complicated game where potential lifelong golfers either quit because it is too difficult or that they experience some form of swing-related pain or discomfort. I mitigate these problems by focusing entirely on the student’s needs and goals while teaching a golf swing method that ultimately takes stress off of the common pain areas of the swing.

Tom,
I had leveled out years ago and stopped playing with any regularity when my kids were born. When I did play, I would rarely keep score because I felt so disconnected and unable to improve. This summer my son turned 7 and took an interest in golf that rekindled my interest. After watching your videos and practicing on my backyard net, I finally feel like I understand a swing. I shot 88 this week on just my third full round of the year. Because of the understanding I got from your videos I was able to accurately identify and correct the couple of missed swings I had that day and not spiral into a bad round. I have never felt as confident in my golf swing. I am excited to play golf again and excited to keep score again. Thank you!

I'm 80 years old and been following the conventional shift to right side weight on right foot then back to left foot. This instruction about more weight on the left side is fantastic so you can have easier more hip turn. Can't wait to try it out tomorrow.

Hogan analysis is right on point and clear to understand. It immediately improved my ball striking from the first time I tried it. 13 out of 14 fairways, and 17 out of 18 greens in today's round is enough to convince me to stay with the Hogan / Saguto swing for the rest of my life!

I've binged 10 of Tom's Ben Hogan videos in 3 days after discovering him and they are the 10 best, most simple, most effective videos I've ever seen. Love this guy. Wish I had these lessons 20 years ago...

Your Ben Hogan tip is amazing. Although I read Ben Hogan book many times, I failed to register the essence of his message until I viewed your relevant episode many more than once. Thank you so much. Adnan

Thanks, Tom! I have had a number of "traditional golf swing lessons" since I took up golf for real in 1997. I am 77 years old now, retired and working on a way to graduate back to the white tees (club tees) from the green tees (forward tees). Some of what you are teaching via analysis of Ben Hogan's swing is similar to the "stack and tilt" fundamentals, i.e., weight forward, left shoulder goes down (which happens if you turn your hips), arms straight, hands in and hips tucked. All of that seems to happen in the great video of Hogan's swing in your selected videos. Having returned to using many elements of stack & tilt have helped me. BUT THIS VIDEO OF HOGAN AND YOUR ANALYSIS give me real hope. I really don't care whether I get back to the white tees; I just want to play better golf, and it seems to be happening now. Thanks, again, Tom!

After viewing your lesson I searched YouTube for several Ben Hogan videos. He talks about several aspects in his 5 fundamentals book. It became vividly clear to me that the most dominant feature of his swing was the forward weight shift and tailbone movement toward the target. His tempo appears quick on those old films and his arms are close to his body. His backswing is compact. To me it’s clear that that hip move was the core of his swing. Thank you for giving this the attention it deserves.

Mr. Hogan's "hip turn put weight on the front side." WOW! VERY insightful. And what's amazing to me is the way you draw out the fact that what golf's greatest ball-striker did flies in the face of what is now being taught by most PGA pros. Very insightful, Tom. Thank you for helping me to solidify, in my mind, what I need to do during the backswing.

Thank you Tom for that Ben Hogan hip turn. Makes a lot of sense and my game because of that hip turn is getting better and better. Ben Hogan's hip turn is worth working on to improve your golf swing.

Been taking lessons for the past few months where they taught me to move my shoulders away from the target behind the ball with all the weight on the trail foot heal. Then start the hip rotation. This is for the drive, to create a wider swing arc. Problem is, I am going out of sync during the downswing hitting embarrassing fat shots and thin shots with my drive. So frustrating. The place where I take lessons have video practice. Found Tom's videos of Ben Hogan swings recently and tried it during practice and on the course. Almost immediately, I was getting much more distance, speed and consistency. It is very easy to do the upward acceleration from that Ben Hogan position on top of the down swing, and also keeping more weight on the lead foot during the entire swing. Great work, Tom, with going against all the conventions and explaining an easier path. Thank you so much!

I watched this a couple years ago while i was trying to improve my game at age 68 and felt that Hogan's swing was a good one to imitate since he was only a little bigger than me.
I am happy to reveal that in the past two months, I scored under par for the first time since my collegiate golf days. AND I have shot under my age three times. It's amazing how the psychological aspect of the game has also changed - now that I have confidence with this new swing and the ability to repeat results. I have never been a golfer with a lot of birdies. but in those three rounds, one round I had 7 birdies, another 6 birdies (five in a row) and the third had 4 birdies. My advice is to work most of this on the practice range first and when you think you've got it - take it to the course and try to "trust" the new swing. Don't focus on score - focus on using the new swing EVERY shot. Then one day it all falls into place.

Good work here SagutoGolf - wish I had known of this 60 years ago :)

You make the best golf content on YouTube Tom. Everything you're teaching makes so much sense.

Also very entertaining 😅

Thanks for your extended thoughtfulness about the golf swing. Your illustrations about when the downswing begins has helped me clear a point of confusion I created, by thinking that the downswing began during the beginning of the lateral movement towards the target. There’s a clear and definite moment when the downswing begins. The backswing and downswing don’t overlap! Just because there’s movement towards the target doesn’t mean that the downswing has begun! Since I have already given you a like 👍🏼 please consider a virtual hug 🤗

THIS IS THE BEST GOLF VIDEO IVE EVER WATCHED WHAT. YOU HAVE NO CLUE HOW MUCH U HAVE JUST HELLED ME. I’ve literally worked for weeks on weeks everyday trying to rotate properly and watched countless videos. Another good tip after doing this hogan hip rotation is trying to have you butt face behind u at impact just like hogan. THANK YOU

Tom, you are an absolute genius and really good at teaching this. A cue that’s worked great for me is the feeling of crunching my right side to initiate the downswing. I think that’s sort of the same thing here with the “automatic starter”. I was at the range today and couldn’t miss a shot after this clicking. Absolutely blasting every iron 7i and above 200+ yards. Great stuff and keep up the content!

Thank you! My whole life I was taught to avoid having too much weight forward, but this move gives me a much more balanced feeling swing.
