Sinfonia Concertante

A sinfonia concertante is a musical form that combines elements of both the symphony and the concerto. It typically features a small group of soloists (or sometimes just one) that performs in dialogue with a full orchestra. The piece emphasizes the interplay between the soloists and the larger ensemble, often with virtuosic passages for the solo instruments.

To this day, we still don't know if it's truly Wolfgang Mozart who wrote this Sinfonia Concertante K297b. We know he wrote one prior to this spurious work, but sadly it was lost in a fire.

This is a great compilation — but only the very tip of a giant ‘Sinfonia Concertante’ oeuvre of late-18th century composers including J. C. Bach in London & Cambini in Paris who penned (with great commercial success — especially when top instrumental soloists could be employed) about 60 of these types of compositions EACH — and there are literally dozens of other composers that contributed to this most beautiful of all the mixed concerti-genre —

Check out J.C. Bach : Sinfonia Concertante in C (1775) for violoncello, oboe, flute & basoon which opening movement’s motifs were ‘borrowed in tribute to the English Bach’ in the beautiful sinfonia concertante style extended openjng of the grand aria ‘Marten Alle Arten’ by Mozart in his opera ‘Die Entfuehrung aus dem Serail’ K. 382 (written c. Sept-Oct 1781) — which shews just how much M. admired him !!
