Coffee should not be ground right after roasting, it should rest a couple of days to equalize and release some of the co2

Interesting experiment! Some air fryers come with a rotating drum which could work pretty well for even roasting. My home roaster is a Behmor which is basically a toaster over with a rotating drum and some chaff catching and smoke suppression features.

As you already pointed out: the roast is pretty uneven, I guess your shaking wasn't quite enough. Not sure if you did but usually you'd have to wait at least a week before using the roasted beans for making coffee as they're heavily de-gasing in the beginning. Perhaps that would've taken your rating to an 8.5! :)

I did this using a hot air popper. I got the directions and green coffee beans from the Lis Gatos Coffee Roasting shop in Los Gatos, California. It was both local for me and highly recommended. They recommended green Columbian Supremo. I did it outside on our veranda. The chaff wasn’t a problem due to the air popper and being outside. The results were amazing! I am now located in the other east coast but they happily ship the green beans to me! My grandparents used to roast their own coffee beans but my grandfather was a cowboy (born in 1890).

I wouldn’t roast a blend that way. Roast each single origin and then mix them together after. Varietals will have different sizes and densities which means they’ll roast at different speeds.

In Ethiopia and Eritrea, we traditionally roast our coffee every time we make coffee(even if it's every day). We roast the amount we need for one time. There is nothing better than fresh roasted coffee.

Another potential tip to bump up that 7.5: do a coarse grind on the beans when brewing French Press, not a fine ground. Looks like a fun project either way!

☕️ use egg pan or wok to roast your green coffee beans until it’s dark brown, but not black. Enjoy.❤

We used a hot air popcorn popper from the 80’s

using a single type of been works better because they roast evenly. Also, a hot air popper works better (and I have and love that same air fryer). It is constantly moving the beans as well blowing the chaff away. Also, I roast mine on the veranda so the chaff, etc. is never a problem.

What I do is a smidgeon less beans and a slightly lower temp.
It is easier to control the process for a rich flavor. I found I had more success using my Panasonic Convection Toaster Oven than my Instant Vortex 6 Qt Air Fryer. I mentioned the size of the air fryer because the beans need more room surrounding them for a better roast. But, this is just me! If anyone has a better oven, timing, etc, …please, let me know😊

"Not perfectly even" surely the understatement of the year...😮

I can’t wait to try this with my family. Thank you Mike ❤

Grew up roasting the green coffee beans in a skillet on stovetop. Better to use stainless steel (or another thinner metal) than cast iron bc you need to keep it constantly moving and it’s good to keep a close handle on the temp. (lol now that I think about it, prob why I took to making French omelette so easily)

Cool experiment though!

Been doing this for years, 400 degrees for 20 minutes, I put less beans in and the air fryer actually moves the beans around pretty good. Makes a nice dark roast for me.

Grind is present tense, GROUND is past tense.

The uneven roast might have been blending varieties before roasting. Everything will have different water content, density, etc. better to roast individually then blend.

Fire roasting in a cast iron works too, Smokey taste too if you’re into that

I come from a place where we roast our coffee at home. Way before it was done over fire and constant shake now I use popcorn maker it's slowly but does the job without the need of shaking from time to time.

Worked at a clinic where a doctor would roast his own beans. He used a popcorn air popper
