While I must admit that this is pretty darn satisfying and probably smells amazing you really shouldn't make drinking home roasted coffee a habit. Because while roasting the beans acrylamide forms which is carcinogenic and if ingested regularly over longer periods of time will increase your risk of getting cancer. Companies have parameters and standards they need to meet and have ways of controlling the acrylamide content but when roasting at home you don't. But I am not saying that you should never roast your own coffee, doing so from time to time is completely fine.

Considering you have to let them sit for another 2 weeks to get all the carbon dioxide out this seems like a lot of work for a very small batch. You can get a small automatic roaster for about 150, do you still prefer this?

TL;DR -- There are better hand roasters in the market

Not seeing the coffee beans while roasting is a very bad idea.

Also, when you reach the first crack, you need to prolong that first crack by controlling the heat. You can't just say that "I need another 20 seconds and hope that these beans are done".

And we haven't even talked about the difference in roasting natural vs washed processed coffee beans.
