In chinese culture (and a lot of Asian ones I think), the bridesmaids are the ones doing that 😂 their task is to make things extra hard for the groom and groomsmen and defend their sister (bride) as a sign that the groom is willing to overcome any obstacles for their love while the groomsmen will help their bro. I used to play this game called Adventure Quest Worlds.

The developers would add in their own weddings as these long epic adventures to share with the player base.

I remember one of the weddings the filmed live, inviting all the staff and guest stars they had over the years, and they had people dressed as off-brand pop culture figures come in and try to disrupt the wedding multiple times (also portrayed in game).

Each person in the wedding party got their chance to shine, even the bride and groom stepping up to battle to defend their wedding.

I ate that shit up.

In Romania they kidnap the bride. Then the husband to be has to get ahold of the kidnappers, and negotiate (usually with bottles of booze or similar treats) for her return. My Swedish friend married a Romanian woman, and since he’s used to Swedish culture of viking ladies standing their own ground he just figured that she was their problem now and that she’d return victoriously shortly. The Romanian side of the family had to push him into action.
