Vice Admiral Anup Singh

Indian Navy's Finest hour 1971

Vice Admiral Anup Singh is the former Commander in Chief of the Eastern Command of the Indian Navy.

This is a story of a young service, the Indian Navy which grew rapidly in the late 1960s that was determined to play a significant role in the 1971 liberation war of Bangladesh.

It started by training commandos made up of Muktibahani in Plassey near Calcutta infiltrated into enemy territory and virtually crippled the adversary's assets in present day Bangladesh which is largely riverine. The Western Fleet deployed missile boats, meant for coastal defense, which were towed and used to devastating effect in bombing Karachi. Operation Trident and operation Python are unique in Naval battles. Finally INS Vikrant, India's aircraft carrier acquired from the UK in 1960 dominated 18000 square nautical miles in the Bay of Bengal as her squadron of Sea Hawk and Alize aircrafts drew blood in Chittagong, Cox's Bazaar and Khulna and sealed off all exit and entry routes.

The Navy's role in 1971 liberation war of Bangladesh is significant. Hear the story in this episode.

Only one comment prior to mine for this fascinating piece of history? Pathetic! Vice Admiral Anup Singh’s superb scene-setting and flawless narration are a treat, quite unique in this age of ungrammatical English-Hinglish! Kudos, Vice Admiral!
We grew up hearing of these battles on AIR as they took place - scratchy battlefield commentaries that enabled us to imagine the fearless exploits of the Indian armed forces. So much was achieved by so few with so little, even amidst superpower posturing! 🫡🙏
