As a young boy I would draw all the time, then slowly life took over and it wasnt until lock down that I happened to be in contact with my cousin who asked if I was still drawing as I had drawn an eye for her that in all honesty I do not remember doing., anyway she proded me into action, all I had to hand was printing paper and an hb pencil, so after forty five years I am back in school :)

Graphite is my base. Fresh, simple and cheap. Misty scenes, atmospheric landscapes or an object. Everthing. I love this medium and I always get back to it ☺

I remember my art teacher stressed how important drawing was, so this was the foundation for all my art, and pencil is so versatile.

I like drawing with graphite pencils because the artist is able to create either the softness of a subject, and stark lines and detail as well. It's a "forgiving" medium for those of us who are trying to improve our skills, and the effects are so rewarding at the end of a drawing. I've learned so much about graphite from your course videos and "Getting Sketchy" episodes. I would greatly appreciate a free one-year membership as I continue on my journey of honing my skills as an artist. It all begins and ends with solid drawing skills!

Drawing with graphite and creating something beautiful is such food for the soul right now. Sketching can bring so much peace in a time of hate, fear and uncertainty.

You can’t beat graphite for its versatility. There are times when a single pencil is all that’s needed. It’s a take anywhere medium. There is something innately comforting about just using a pencil on paper. Maybe it takes me back to my drawing as a child. It feels like home in many ways. The monochromatic feel achieved from graphite can create a sense of drama which plays on light and shade. Graphite can convey the story of a piece in ways that other mediums can’t.

I love drawing with graphite! It was my first medium and I always go back to it, largely because it is so versatile and, surprisingly, expressive. Graphite lends itself to nuance in shading and highlight that colored media (colored pencil, pastel, watercolor, and oils) don't really seem to offer, from my perspective. Graphite is really the only way to truly learn value since you cannot depend on color to convey darkness or light.

I am new to The Art of Drawing & Painting. After suffering a Traumatic Brain Injury, after that the creativity side in me became more pronounced in a way of relaxing. I fell in love with art. I have enjoyed watching you easy to follow techniques.

I discovered during this challenging time of living with covid and all its complications that simplifying my art work has brought me enjoyment and insight. The simplicity of graphite on paper brings me into a state of peace and its smoothness allows my creative process to unfurl like no other medium, I can surrender to its magic and be surprised by what appears before me !
Thank you !

I like drawing with graphite pencils because you really only need 1 pencil and a piece of paper to create a masterpiece. Not 1 million different colours, no expensive bruhes, no extraordinaire art materials that you absolutely must have to survive - just 1 pencil. That is, ladies and gentlemen, lifesaving.

I love drawing with graphite because the contrast between the values strips the subject down to to the essence and creates a powerful emotional response. Thank you for these videos and for sharing your expertise.

I love to work in graphite becauuse it reminds me of when I was young. This also gives me a good practice for learning values of a subject.
Tfs.

Graphite is what I started my art journey with. It's readily available and doesn't cost a lot of money and you can take it with you easily.
Great drawing and video Matt.

Why do I like drawing with graphite pencils...it seems to me of all the art mediums I play with, graphite pencils give me the greatest control. Of course, along with that when I do a poor job there is nothing to blame but myself :-)

Hello.
I am a 62 yrs of age. I have been drawing since I was a little girl. I have only taken two art courses which was in high school. I just started watching YouTube last year. I have been using graphite pencils since the same period. Thank you for the opportunity to win a free membership for a year.

With the little graphite drawings I’ve done it always excited me to see how a picture came alive or realistic looking just by shading.

I enjoy Drawing with graphite as is almost akin to black & white photography training our eyes to see light & dark & mid tones & replicate them on paper which can be challenging but so rewarding to accomplish.

I don't want to be selected for the free year membership as I'm already a member and would love it to go to a new person but I love drawing with graphite because for my entire life I believed that I wasn't artistic at all and couldn't draw or paint. I had art teachers tell me that this just wasn't my thing. So drawing with graphite, which is what I use for freehand drawings, Just gives me that sense of accomplishment and knowing that because someone tells you that you can't do something doesn't mean you can't do it. Once you are willng to put in the work you can do anything. Thanks to Matt and Ashley for giving me the confidence, tools and techniques to try drawing! <3

Although I have tried to commit to being a colored pencil artist, I keep coming back to graphite. For a long time I felt a bit guilty for loving is less time-consuming, easy to blend and erase, easy to get the values right, and less stressful, which all sounds like a lazy way out. I realized that’s they key, however. I’ve restarted almost every CP piece I’ve done, whereas graphite pieces are just a joy. Explaining why I love it is like explaining why fresh cut grass smells so good.
