How I shade:
1.draw something
2.find places were light wouldn’t touch(indentations, spaces between objects, etc…)
3.scribble where you want the shading
4.smear/smooth it with your finger
5.look at your finger that’s covered in graphite and regret all life choices

I’ve got a learning disorder that has ruined learning anything for me, all my life. I desperately want to learn to draw and paint and have watched literally hundreds of YouTube art tutorials. You and painter Stuart Davies are the only 2 instructors I’ve ever been able to understand. Can’t nail down what’s different; you just have a way of explaining things so I can “see” the instructions in my head.
Thank you so, so much. ❤🙏🏼

You are the first artist on youtube that I sit here and go, "oh, I get it now". You explain everything so clearly that it makes complete sense. I took a long break from art and I'm trying to get back to the basics. I would love to be anywhere close to your skill someday. Thank you again for taking the time to explain things. I truly appreciate it!

The understanding light segment was TRULY very helpful!!! I just didnt get how it worked sometimes and just like u said I'd struggle with shading because I didn't know where to put the light exactly. Thank you so much 💓

Why weren't my art teachers this good! Even the tip about not needing any special pencils to get started was awesome! This is a science class for artists! I love all the explanation and the technically detailed walkthroughs! Amazing work! Keep it up. A fan for life!!!

I just wanna say that your art is very imperessive and your videos are easy to follow and not that difficult. I have to say, I saw my art progress really fast, I repeated each drawing at least 3 times and I saw that it was getting better and better! Little tip for the begginers, you just have to do EVERY day a a small session of 20, 40 min and you will see progress very quickly!

I just watched this twice over, super helpful! The one thing I would ask is for you to discuss how you hold your pencil, the direction you shade in, how long your strokes are etc. Thank you again, though, amazing video!

Honestly I havent seen such a clear and simple video as this one. It is so clear thank you. I really appreciate it after wasting my time looking through thousands and not knowing what to do with the pencils. I totally get it and will practice immediately. Its so clear it motivates you to practice. thank you again

“It doesn’t have to be perfect at all”
So is it okay if it looks like it got run over by a car, sliced into a million pieces, burnt into ashes, the ashes then added to water, the water being drunk by someone and then pissed out and gone into the sewers and scooped up by a dog and spit out into mud ?
