Cinema verité – originating in the 1960s, cinema verité refers to a style of camera movement characterised by the absence of stabilising equipment, often used to heighten emotion or convey fast moving action. A simpler version of this definition is simply ‘hand-held’
Cinema = film
Verité = truth (french)
Often used in documentaries or ‘mockumentries’ - the unpolished style insinuates truth. The goal of this technique is to capture the reality of a person, a moment, or an event without any rearrangement for the camera.
This type of cinema is concerned with notions of truth and reality in film.
Great examples of the use of cinema verite are the films/tv shows ‘The Blair Witch Project”, ‘the office’, and ‘What we do in the shadows’
