Endothermic reaction: very, VERY cool.

You see that pun in the video title? See it? I'm not even sorry. Not even a little bit.

Mr Bell manages to pull off the impossible here, as a demonstration devoid of any fire or explosion still manages to draw appreciative gasps from the crowd. (as well as marginally accurate answers to his questions). The reaction between ammonium chloride and barium hydroxide is endothermic, and cools down the wet wooden block beneath the beaker enough to freeze the water, sticking the beaker to the wooden block.

As well as this excitement, the video also contains Mr Bell managing to burn his nostrils out with ammonia and then accidentally insinuate that one of his class may have wet themselves. It's all in a day's work.

P.s. Bonus points for saying nice things about Mr Bell's new glasses.

I'm actually slightly surprised how excited the kids are. My thought is the reaction isn't very impressive but the teacher is so enthusiatic and engages the kids. Planning my own chemistry class this autumn and thought i'd adopt this stunt :P
Any other ideas how to demonstrate the drastic temperature drop?

omg! i tried this on school Thank u very much for this experiment, Although unfortunately i failed on freezing with the block of wood :( I used 10 grams of Ammonium chloride and 32g Barium Hydroxide... Omy.. IT SMELLS AWFUL.. please wear your surgical mask..[i didn'nt wear one, i only have a surgical gloves] (not a pair) Lol it was fun, it took me 4 mins, for stirring the mixture :D
