The fact that Sia has autism makes the movie even harder to watch

The same way a woman can willfully feed into misogyny, disabled people can feed into ableism. It seems ridiculous and it often is, but there's lots of reasons for why people of a certain community end up just as misinformed and bigoted as some people outside of said community. Being part of any community does not give you a pass to spread harmful misinformation, especially as a celebrity with influence and money that can make an entire film 💀

The thing that bothers me the most is that she partnered with autism speaks without any type of research before signing on with an organization. Autism speaks is the most hurtful and ableist organization for autistic people.

reminder to everyone (nondirected) that autistic people can be ableist against autistic people and her being autistic actually changes nothing, even if she knew before the film was created. ableism in the autistic community is actually more common than you think, it's usually pretty much just like this; someone who is low support needs, able to "pass" as neurotypical, etc is most certainly able to view and portray higher needs low masking ""obvious"" autistic people in ableist ways. the spectrum is so wide and just being on it doesn't mean you can understand others experiences because everyone is different. conflating everyones experiences as the same is ableist and downplays the struggles of some autistic people (often the ones whom are the target of ableism).

I think what it really highlights is those of us who have low support needs often have a lot of internalised and unevaluated prejudice against autistic people with higher support needs, that we don't really take the time to unpack while trying to understand ourselves

The ads gave that "normal person view of a special person" feel that was the common depiction (ie insulting charicature) common in media up through the 90's

I really like this. It’s respectful, informative, and the ending lines honestly gave me a lot of hope.

I agree as well that if she spoke to actually autistic individuals she might’ve gotten the diagnosis sooner as well, and I hope that having this diagnosis is able to help her understand herself and autism better.

90% of autistic people I've met (irl) were also ableist to autistic people who didn't have the same symptoms as them. It's wild, like bro THAT YOU

I agree autistic people can be ableist. Im autistic. Unfortunately I had treated an autistic friend badly by holding them to standards that were harmful that i held myself to and was very ugly about it. Saying things like "i put in all this work with mine. You gotta put your work in." Which was so ugly. We obviously grew apart after this and there was also other drama but i sincerely hope they're doing ok.

Also saw the trailer for Music and went "oh this movie is gonna make me scream" and stayed so far away from it.

Yeah if the makers of the Dear Evan Hansen movie came out as suicidal/depressed/anxious that doesn’t stop the solid week it triggered me

This is very true. Anyone can be ableist and often it's internalized ableism. With more knowledge people can learn and do better, though. On another note, It seems a lot of people want to give Elon Musk a pass because he's autistic. Unfortunately, there are people who will use being neurodivergent as an excuse for being crappy humans.

Thank you! Being disabled does not mean you can't be abelist, just like internalized misogyny or homophobia there is internalized abelism. Sia took the " I'm a victim of cancel culture" approach instead of seeing that many of her critics are people on the spectrum who have given her nothing but constructive criticism, she has chosen to double down instead of reflect on why they are saying what they are.

I was diagnosed with autism after this move came out and I knew it was wrong well before that. I listened to autistic people and how much they didn’t like autism speaks or th puzzle piece. I have been diagnosed with adhd since I was 6 and I’m sure that makes me more sympathetic BUT it doesn’t take much research to know autism speaks is for the parents to fix there kids not the people with autism.

this is actually something i struggle with myself. being forced to mask and cope early on makes it difficult for me to relate to my autistic peers who weren't forced to do the same. because of that i often find myself looking down on other ND people who dont have those masking and coping skills i have. i *know* my masking and coping is maladaptive but i still get annoyed when they cant just deal with it like i can

Ive known plenty of people who are autistic and ableist. Being autistic doesn’t make you immune to being ableist. Most of us have internalized ableism at least.

autistics can definitely b ableist 2 other autistics with different symptoms & also 2 themselves, on the disability discourse tumblr i see especially those with less support needs being super ableist 2 others with more disabling or "disgusting" symptoms

People need to stop thinking someone can’t be bigoted towards a demographic they themselves are part of

Okay I’m a caregiver (currently figuring out if I’m autistic because I’ve been realizing more and more I’m showing signs of it) and even I know you shouldn’t be using that as a restraint. Technically in my state you can’t “restrain” anyone, but there are workarounds that you’re taught in training to keep people from hurting themselves or others, and especially to keep you from hurting them because I’m pretty sure that’s abuse regardless of intention. Yes, accidents happen and whatnot but doing something like that more than once and justifying it as “crushing them with love” is so disturbing and upsetting as someone who has genuine compassion and empathy regardless of whether or not I end up being autistic myself. I haven’t seen the film and don’t know if I could handle it tbh because that’s so awful.

Reminds me of this time I had a disagreement with a "friend" of mine; he told me I was so out of touch I must be autistic. So I did the research. Turns out we were *both* autistic. And also he was gaslighting me or whatever.
