Omega Speedmaster battle: black vs. white, sapphire vs. hesalite

Taking a look at what makes these watches unique. Are you drawn to the black dial's sleekness or the white dial's clarity? Do you prefer sapphire's robustness or hesalite's vintage appeal?

My Speedmaster 386! Hesalite is my favourite watch. It took a while to really fall in love with it, but it's such a versatile piece, full of history, near perfect timeless looks that look modern enough on a bracelet but like a beautiful vintage piece as soon as you switch to leather. Looking to add the white dial to the collection at some point too.

I own the 3861 hesalite version and love it but a cheeky cash win would see that white dial sapphire crystal version joining my collection for sure.

I'm trying to make this very choice right now. Got my name down for a white dial and there's apparently a year waiting list

For me, best version is vintage one with tritium patina. I almost never wore my modern hesalite but I wear my 861 145.0022 all the time now.

Would be nice if these versions had the options for ceramic bezels.

I don’t know why you call the original 3861 Hesalite the “standard” Speedmaster when it’s a Legend 😎 Someone also taught me this week to replace the word “need” with want in my vocabulary. He’s right, the motivation is different

They DO have a Black Dial with a saphire sandwich... And, at least by the photos, the Saphire Sandwich looks bigger than the Classic Hesalite version.
They did something different

Look at that first Speedmaster advertising drawing and notice how a Speedie was added on Aldrin's left hand wrist as they didn't spot Aldrin wore Speedie #43 on his righthand wrist during Apollo 11 lunar EVA! #Moonwatchuniverse

I’d take a black dial Pro over this new white dial any day of the week. Hesalite would be just fine. That aside, I bought a preowned Zenith A385 instead, no regrets.

I paid £6550 for my Rolex Sub at an AD in 2019, could not consider the speedie at similar money…completely different proposition. They went from £3500-£4500 in just a few years…but used prices go down, not up…the white dial shown here can be bought on Chrono for less than list brand new.

Given that the Speedmaster is available and affordable, I wonder if it outsells the Daytona?

Do yourself a favour and buy a vintage cal. 321 speedy. I purchased a 105.012 (geeky but it’s the same reference as the actual speedy worn on the moon), it has the aesthetics as a modern but with endlessly more charm

It probably wasn't really a moon watch anyway.

Probably get some heat for this but they need to slim down the proportions a little and fit it with an automatic movement. The aesthetics are iconic for sure, but all modern Omega just seems so bulky and inelegant to me nowadays. Even down to the choice of awful blocky arrow hands on the planet ocean, and the tacky two tone coloured lume application on everything annoys me. Personally I cba with a manual calibre in the speedy which feels like an inferiority compared with its rivals. And for god's sake Omega, get rid of those blocky arrow hands and bring back the broad sword hands...

The whole NASA and Snoopy thing just makes it a bit gay, TBH. Nerd watch that's too big and has far too many variants.
