It is not an easy job to draw the border between the history of Italy and the history of Rome. In so many places, the two political and geographical entities collide. They wouldn’t be possible without each other, but they each have their own story. Rome’s history is only a small fragment of Italy’s history. Although it is just a city, Rome was the birthplace of the republic, a great empire, and notable philosophers, poets, and artists. But on a larger scale, Rome expanded its borders, spreading not only through Italy but also through the whole known world. In that context, Rome ceased being only a city; it also became a universal imperial symbol and the pride of Italy.

Despite the many critics in the comments, you did a great job. Italy's history is so rich and eventful that's truly impossible not to exclude important pieces.

As Italian, I'm very proud to read comments of non-Italians who knows italian history more accurate than this documentary

I love Italy. I appreciate the long and complex history of this great country. It would be impossible to please all viewers because it is a summary. I found this useful and entertaining. 🙏🏻

Italy has access to the Ionian Sea, not the Aegean as is inadvertently mentioned in the video. [The Italian Peninsula is bounded by the Adriatic Sea in the east, the Sea of Sicily in the south, the Ionian Sea in the southeast, the Ligurian and the Tyrrhenian Seas in the west; all those seas are part of the Mediterranean Sea.]

It's wrong to say that Italy is unusually fertile. Actually it's quite the opposite having few plains. Agriculture was historically practiced even in the mountains and it was really harsh.

@13:31 Sorry, but that's incorrect. Italy was not made a unified republic in 1861, but rather, a kingdom. The monarchy lasted until the end of World War II. It was a constitutional monarchy, with elections to the parlament, to be sure, but it was not a republic.

I just came back from Vatican City and Italy (Rome, Pompeii, Venice, Verona, Milan and Turin), you did great job for people to get to know Italy in 16 minutes. No any single person can write history precisely correct, even the established historians have huge disagreement and use arguable terminologies. To me, the most important thing about history is the relatively logical explanation in big picture.

The use of animation and reenactments in this documentary brings ancient history to life in a way that is both entertaining and educational

The "Byzantine Empire" was actually the Eastern Roman Empire, which existed until 1453. These people considered themselves Roman, not Byzantine. To not even mention the capital at Constantinople is lazy. And this may seem like nit-picking, but mispronouncing "Medici" is unforgivable in a so-called video about Italy's history.

You don't say anything of Greeks in Italy, actually most of the cities from Naples (Neapolis in Greek) and south, Sicily included were Greek colonies for more than 500 years . Also most of South Italy and Sicily were part of the Greek speaking Byzantine Empire for many centuries AD . Even today there are Greek speaking villages in Italy

Constantine did not "convert" to Christianity and was only baptized upon his deathbed. He also did not "create the Catholic Church, " which was extant in hierarchy, doctrine, and liturgy since the first century AD. What he did was legalize Christianity and removed extensive state-sponsored persecutions, while all the while still generally revering the old Pagan deities, mostly for political and socio-stability reasons.

I love your mini documentary or show, but you should speak more about the Greek, because they’ve shaped Italy 🇮🇹, they played a important roll in the peninsula of Italy 🇮🇹👍👍👍

I believe most americans don't really care about hollywood anymore. To many problems and issues going on in the united states for americans to really care about rich actors. But my heart goes out to the normal workers like the cooks, cleaners, drivers, office staff etc who are suffering duevto this strike.
