Kyoto Station

Kyoto Station was designed by emeritus professor (University of Tokyo) Hiroshi Hara and opened in 1997. The extensive station has a total of 235 000 m² of floor space. The original red brick station opened in 1877 and two station buildings were constructed thereafter prior to the present station building.

The main station is served by 18 tracks. Lines serving the station include the Tokaido Shinkansen (Tokyo and Hakata), Nara, Kansai Airport, Japan Rail Kyoto, Biwako, Kosei and Sagano-Sanin Lines.
A Kyoto Municipal Subway station (Karasuma Line) is located adjacent to station.
