Linda Ronstadt - The Waiting

This is a great cover of one of Tom Petty's best songs - more rockier than usual vocals from Linda. This is to be found on her 1995 album ' Feels Like Home ' Elektra Records.

LYRICS

"The Waiting"

Oh baby don't it feel like heaven right now
Don't it feel like something from a dream
Hey I've never known nothing quite like this
Don't it feel like the night might never be again
Baby we know better than to try and pretend
Honey, no one could've ever told me about this
I said yeah yeah
Yeah yeah yeah yeah

The waiting is the hardest part
Every day you see one more card
You take it on faith
You take it to the heart
The waiting is the hardest part

Well yeah you might've chased a couple women around
Oh all it ever got you is down
Yeah then there were those that made me feel good
But never as good as I feel right now
Baby you're the only one that's ever known how
To make me want to live like I want to live now
I said yeah yeah
Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah

The waiting is the hardest part
Every day you get one more yard
You take it on faith
You take it to the heart
The waiting is the hardest part

Oh, don't let it kill you babe
Don't let it get to you
Don't let it kill you babe
Don't let it get to you
I'll be your bleeding heart
I'll be your crying fool
Don't let this go too far
Don't let it get to you

[Guitar break]

I said yeah yeah
Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah

The waiting is the hardest part
Every day you get one more yard
You take it on faith
You take it to the heart
The waiting is the hardest part

The waiting is the hardest part

[Mandolin break]

It's the hardest part
It's the hardest part

I heard this for the first time on Tom Petty Radio over the weekend. Had no idea she ever covered this. Thanks David Fricke for making me aware of this version. Tremendous.

Linda always sang THE SONG, not a single unnecessary note, no vocal histrionics, power without screeching and a respect for the lyric. Simply the best.

At Linda's induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, 4 great female vocalist sang her songs and all 4 could NOT equal Linda's Power, Heart and Soul ....

The greatest chick singer evah? Yeah, I think so. Tender and powerful. Hearing her live was a thrill.

Poignant power and heartbreak were Ronstadt's natural vocal gifts. Glad she brought those rare gifts to this Tom Petty tune.

I saw her in Pittsburgh in the 70's I remember it like it was yesterday. Incredible is the only word that comes to mind.

The great Linda Ronstadt. Talent, Beauty, Style and Class. She never received the recognition and praise that she should have for all that she accomplished.

She still sounds like she's 18 on this. Just amazing. Probably the greatest pure singer ever.

I overlooked this song originally, but now see it's one of her best ever country-rock vocals : starts at the top and only goes higher...

I heard this 3 days ago with friends driving from PA to NY. I thought it was the Chicks. They told me it was Ronstadt. That Blew my mind. Love them both (Ronstadt . Petty) so much. Great music. love

Ronstadt brings some super fine vocals and all her heart to this terrific Tom Petty tune. Linda was going to do "American Girl" with The Heartbreakers but alas it didn't happen. Goodbye from this world Mr. Petty.

No one else like Linda - pipes of glory. A songwriter's champion - a musician's best friend. A rare case of sanity and solid soul in a dirty rotten business.
