The average is a poor index of to judge 401k's because a small number of extreme savers have skewed the average. The better number is the median value. Unfortunately the median values are far less.

Isn't this meaningless though because people change jobs frequently? So the average balance per account may be as reported, but people may have multiple accounts from various jobs.
