Today is July 1 2023 as I sit here and think about my first day in bootcamp in July 1 1971 .
Right after two weeks out of high school, I'll never forget that day .

My son is a Squid and dad was a police man on Great Lakes Naval Base for 40 years.
He just passed away Tuesday.

Hard to believe it's been 24 years since I marched with my Recruit Division. Only did four years, but they were some of the best in my life. Mediterranean Cruise, Unitas Cruise, and the beginning of Iraq.

I can still smell the mothballs (from 1976...) Back when I went through they used the 'air shots' for most of the shots. They told you not to move, of course there was always that 'one guy'...

Looks less painful (shots) than during my boot camp in 89...we had a bruiser gun that gave us shots.

They say once you go to the fleet everything gets better. Well have fun telling yourself that for 4 to 6 years dreaming of the day you get out lol. Best time I ever had in the navy was the last 4 weeks of me separating. I'll never regret leaving that place! My life is 100% better as a free man than I was as a 3 year second class. I wouldn't trade the freedom I have now for anything the military or government have to offer cause I know there always strings attached unfortunately.
