Cheers right back! Cutting them thin like this gives you more surface area for breading, flavor and dipping, plus it gives that membrane less of a risk of pulling the whole thing out when you take a bite because it's not as wide.

It's possible to remove the membrane from each slice before preparation, but it's also possible to remove each seed from a strawberry before eating it.

I haven't tried making such thin onion rings, but after watching this video I have to try it.
