As an avid pumpkin carver, I sometimes do it this way, and sometimes do it the traditional way, cutting out the top, but it all depends on the design I’m doing. But when I do cut out the top, I never light the candle before putting it in. It’s much safer to light the candle only after lowering it in. But if you cut out the bottom, and you’re using a real candle, you need to cut a vent hole in the top to let the smoke/soot and heat out.
