Our whole team was rushing a church in the middle of town. The enemy dropped a bombing run up the length of the street killing many team mates. The last bomb landed right next to where I was laying, what felt like centimeters away. The dirt cloud was visible, particle effects from the explosions visible in my periphery as I stared down sights at the church.
I still had to bandage, but one more bomb and I was a goner.

...Then about 30 seconds later I got sniped from the church.

Think about how many actually survived in IRL. Just looking at the barrage coming, knowing you cant run away in time and just praying to god your Trench will protect you.

My uncle didn’t talk much about the war, but he told me a story of how him and his guys were staying in a school house in France.

He warned his buddies to sleep with the helmet on because you never know. They ignored him, the school house was shelled, and two of his buddies were killed by debris that fell on their head as they slept.

Who knows if the helmet would have saved him, but it stuck with him. He was on the second wave of Omaha beach.
