Tuned In Podcast 083: Is Tuning on the Street Actually Better Than the Dyno?

What’s the best bang-for-buck calibration platform for a late-model GM vehicle? Is there anything you can’t do on a good reflashing platform? And just how hard is it to make money in the automotive YouTube space? Jeremy Formato of @Fasterproms1 joins us this week to answer these questions and many more.

-------------------------
------------------------

Many will know Jeremy from his popular YouTube channel and tuning business, Fasterproms. Those that have watched, will know that this is a guy who has been in the tuning game for many years, growing up with a father that was a pioneer in the aftermarket fuel injection tuning space.

In this episode, we discuss Jeremy’s start in the game as he learned the ropes from his father and his father’s colleagues before taking over the business nearly straight out of high school. Like anyone who has been doing this for a while, Jeremy’s got some great anecdotes from the early days, which are always a good reminder of just how good we’ve got it now.

We next dive deep into the world of reflashing GM vehicles — by far the most cost-effective way of modifying the calibration of these potential-filled machines. The amount of power that we’ve now got when it comes to reflashing these vehicles is astonishing — there’s really not a lot we can’t do. There are of course cons to go with all the pros, so Jeremy and Andre break these down and discuss at what point someone should consider moving to an aftermarket standalone ECU.

Next, we spend some time talking about the different ways we can approach tuning — everyone associates tuning with a dyno, but with the prevalence of street tuning, as well as the increasing popularity of e-tuning, it’s not the only way to get it done.

This conversation also spends a little time discussing YouTube, and Jeremy is open about exactly why he reduced his video output dramatically over the last year.

Mr. Andre.. We live in a dumbed-down society, where tik-tok has shortened the attention span of an average citizen, to of a gold fish. You provide a very niche content and none of that will remotely ever compete with a 10 sec vid of a cat. We are a small group, that enjoys and appreciates your content, the effort and the time. Most importanly .. if you enjoy making the videos, its all that really matters. Thank you.. and please dont stop. We are out there.

Having worked as a design engineer for car manufacturers, I know the dynos they use cost a few million dollars. They are able to recreate road resistance, independently measure and adjust roller settings on all four wheels etc.. and are also perfectly calibrated. so I have always wondered if the dynos at tuning shops which only cost 250k are actually giving you good and "safe" dyno runs. I know a lot of people who have no issues on the road but then go bang on the dyno 🤷‍♂️

Had a PAIGGY BACK emanage blue on my r33 gts25t with basically a steel wheel turbo, factory injectors and a super basic exhaust. It was no powerhouse making a massive 230rwkw but i used to get 100-120km for 10L or so of fuel. Didnt matter how hard i drove it did about 130k kms once it was tuned before the bores where worn out.. so it got some pistons n rods more of a aftermarket ecu ect but it was best on the emanage overall

Nice to see (hear) Jeremy on here. He has a lot of good knowledge of GM engine platforms.

Sad part is the more technical it gets the smaller the audience. Because alot of so called car people only want to look cool don't care about racing. They want to see a big dyno number not the fast car. I'm the nerd that wants to see how and why the car can make the power and run the number.

you should talk to someone who knows the Saab trionic ecu....some very interesting stuff like ionic knock sensing and the trionic tuning suite....all free and opened up by dedicated group of people. some people getting good power on stock internals. so even the engines are pretty decent. 600hp on mid 90's cars. Its worth a look anyway.

Tuning on a dynapack or constant load dyno (mustang, etc...) is the best

It makes me sad to see so much content on the same handful of platforms.
LS/K swap is so boring anymore. Same goes for HP Tuners, Motec/Haltech et Al.

Be brave. Tune an early 2000s Toyota shitbox with an automatic 🤣🤣🤣
