Peter Capaldi REMEMBERS His FIRST DAY On Doctor Who

Peter Capaldi remembers his first day on set as the 12th Doctor and what it was like taking over from Matt Smith who played the 11th Doctor.

Peter remembers being shown into the Tardis by Jenna Coleman before finally meeting Matt Smith before he left set for the last time. Matt gave Peter a hug before passing on The Doctor's wristwatch and giving his blessing for Peter to take over ownership of the TARDIS.

Such a lovely way for the baton to be passed from Smith to Capaldi and both of them made spectacular Doctors. Which is your favourite of the two?

Doctor Who is a British science fiction television series broadcast by the BBC since 1963. The series, created by Sydney Newman, C. E. Webber and Donald Wilson, depicts the adventures of an extraterrestrial being called the Doctor, part of a humanoid species called Time Lords. The Doctor travels in the universe and in time using a time travelling spaceship called the TARDIS, which externally appears as a British police box. While travelling, the Doctor works to save lives and liberate oppressed peoples by combating foes. The Doctor often travels with companions.

Beginning with William Hartnell, fourteen actors have headlined the series as the Doctor; as of 2024, Ncuti Gatwa leads the series as the Fifteenth Doctor. The transition from one actor to another is written into the plot of the series with the concept of regeneration into a new incarnation, a plot device in which, when a Time Lord is fatally injured, their cells regenerate and they are reincarnated, into a different body with mannerisms and behaviour, but the same memories, explaining each actor's distinct portrayal, as they all represent different stages in the life of the Doctor and, together, they form a single lifetime with a single narrative. The time-travelling nature of the plot means that different incarnations of the Doctor occasionally meet. The Doctor can also change ethnicity or gender; in 2017, Jodie Whittaker became the first woman cast in the lead role, and in 2024, Gatwa became the first black actor to headline the series.

The series is a significant part of popular culture in Britain[2] and elsewhere; it has gained a cult following. It has influenced generations of British television professionals, many of whom grew up watching the series.[3] Fans of the series are sometimes referred to as Whovians. The series has been listed in Guinness World Records as the longest-running science-fiction television series in the world,[4] as well as the "most successful" science-fiction series of all time, based on its overall broadcast ratings, DVD and book sales.[5]

The series originally ran from 1963 to 1989. There was an unsuccessful attempt to revive regular production in 1996 with a backdoor pilot in the form of a television film titled Doctor Who. The series was relaunched in 2005 and was produced in-house by BBC Wales in Cardiff. Since 2023, the show has been co-produced by Bad Wolf and BBC Studios Productions in Cardiff. Doctor Who has spawned numerous spin-offs as part of the Whoniverse, including comic books, films, novels and audio dramas, and the television series Torchwood (2006–2011), The Sarah Jane Adventures (2007–2011), K9 (2009–2010), Class (2016), Tales of the TARDIS (2023–2024), and the upcoming The War Between the Land and the Sea. It has been the subject of many parodies and references in popular culture.

It’s always sweet hearing about how one doctor passes the torch to the next

Only in Doctor Who can you have an actor decades younger than their successor pass down a role like it’s a family heirloom

I love this story because from Matt's perspective it's a lot less symbolic and important just frantic. He just says he got so stunned seeing Peter he felt he had to do something, panicked, flung his watch off and handed it over 😂 very funny if you can find it

“This watch is yours now” the 12th Doctor instantly trades it for a bummy coat

Symbolic, that watch. A keeper of time being passed down a line of lords of time.

Peter: Matt passed me the watch

Twelfth Doctor: I traded my watch
Clara: No! You loved that watch!

I love how all the actors who play the Doctor all think the other actors who play the Doctor are absolutely fantastic and excellent

What's not mentioned is the fact that after Matt's introduction to the show, with a billion people staring at him doing his opening scene, he made sure that the same did NOT happen to Peter, and had them keep it to a bare minimum. I think that speaks volumes about Matt Smith. He isn't my favourite Doctor, but he's still a great human. (And he's grown on me.)

It's crazy that they actually built a fully functioning tardis so they could film on location for every episode

Matt Smith's goodbye speech is one of the most touching and emotional goodbyes. When Karen walked up to him, and said "Raggedy Man", I got something in my eye. 😊

That could be such a sweet scene in the doctor's head.

You can hear the emotion in Capaldi's voice. Just a slight tremor on 'this is yours now'. The role meant so much to both of them

All the doctors hold the role close to their hearts but Matt and David always have shown the upmost love and respect to this day for their time as the doctor in the tardis

Loved Capaldi's performances and definitely some of the best episodes ever made under his tenure as Doctor.

We've been rewatching all the shows from Matt Smith onwards. Really enjoyed seeing all Matts episodes again. We're in the middle of the Capaldi seasons now, and it just feels like he took it to a whole new level. Until now, I hadn't realised that he's probably the best to ever do it. He's simply brilliant as the Doctor.
