Toto - Africa (From "Falling in Between Live")

Toto were formed in LA in the late 70s by a group of friends who were all much in demand session musicians. They went on to epitomise the classic American pop/rock sound of the 80s and 90s with hit albums and singles including Hold The Line, Africa, Ill Be Over You and the multi-Grammy winning worldwide hit Rosanna. This concert was recorded at Le Zenith in Paris in March 2007 in front of a wildly enthusiastic sell-out crowd. It captures the band rocking at their hardest and most powerful and giving a new life to all their best loved tracks.

I hear the drums echoing tonight
But she hears only whispers of some quiet conversation
She's coming in 12:30 flight
The moonlit wings reflect the stars that guide me towards salvation
I stopped an old man along the way,
Hoping to find some old forgotten words or ancient melodies
He turned to me as if to say, Hurry boy, It's waiting there for you

CHORUS:
It's gonna take a lot to take me away from you
There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never have

The wild dogs cry out in the night
As they grow restless longing for some solitary company
I know that I must do what's right
As sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti
I seek to cure what's deep inside, frightened of this thing that I've become

CHORUS

(Instrumental break)

Hurry boy, she's waiting there for you

It's gonna take a lot to take me away from you
There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa, I bless the rains down in Africa
I bless the rains down in Africa, I bless the rains down in Africa
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never have

I think this is the best live version I've seen. David ALWAYS sang off key when he sang it.

Bobby Kimball still had the best voice during this tune and could still hit those high notes...One of the best singers in his prime

The Synthesizer guy, Greg, is really great. Toto always had an amazing sound! I was a kid when this song came out. My parents had just gotten separated and my dad had MTV (back when it was awesome music all the time) at his apartment in Long Beach ⛱ NY. He had cable which my brother and I loved. My mom who remained in the house with us kids only had the few channels- 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 21 and 55. Fact - The few channels I mentioned had more great options of TVshows back then than the 500, 000 TV stations we have today. Anyway, we would watch MTV all day if the weather allowed otherwise we were down the street at the beach ⛱. I was mesmerized by the songs and the music videos which were usually like a mini movie lol. I wanted to grow up and be Stevie Nicks. This song, Africa, was and still is one of the best sounds out there. Thank you, Toto, for making life sound so good even when it's not so good!

The measure of a great band is hearing them achieve on stage the same..or better..sound as in the studio. Toto certainly display their immense talents to the fullest.

The way they choreographed the ending on this version is amazing. In my opinion, it's a very touching tribute to Jeff Porcaro -- ending with the drums on this iconic song. Each member takes his bow and then quietly exits, until all that is left is the drummer. Fantastic guys.

man leland sklar, without any hyperbole what an absolute legend, always so unassuming but you could not be a tighter bassplayer. or a cooler looking one for that matter

Simon Phillips on drums and Lee Sklar on bass. What a rhythm section! I think they're doing Mike and Jeff Porcaro justice!

I love this song. Several of the band members are not originals, but it's every bit as good as recording. I'm particularly impressed with the singers.
