One of the all time songwriters and performers. He performs one man on stage singing his folk songs, or with Crazy Horse performing Rock or Grunge before Grunge was a genre. He can play country too. He is also one great guitarist. He was with Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young (CSNY). Old man is one of his best. 😊😊😊

Neil Young was in his early 20s and was suddenly successful and wealthy and he was thinking about what he had vs what was really important for happiness.

Neil wrote this song more than 50 years ago. He's an old man himself now. It comes fast.

The old man was the caretaker and two lawyers sold the 1, 000+ acre ranch to a 25-yr-old long-haired musician (for $350K in 1970).

The old man was probably thinking he was a hippy freak and they were nothing alike.

Young (in 2006):
..."there was a couple living on it that were the caretakers, an old gentleman named Louis Avila and his wife Clara.

...Louis took me for a ride in this old blue Jeep. He gets me up there on the top side of the place, and there’s this lake up there that fed all the pastures, and he says, ‘Well, tell me, how does a young man like yourself have enough money to buy a place like this?’ And I said, ‘Well, just lucky, Louis, just real lucky.’ And he said, ‘Well, that’s the darnedest thing I ever heard.’ And I wrote this song for him.”

This song has special meaning to me. My Dad loved Neil Young and always mentioned this song to me over the years. I'll always remember him when I hear this. I have a text from him saved on my phone that I'll always cherish about this song. He passed away a few years ago. I'll see you again.... "Rolling home to you...."

Wonderful Song & Backstory
Neil Young is a Wonderful Singer/Songwriter. “Heart of Gold” could be next by Neil Young or Possibly “Cinnamon Girl”

Helpless is nice, Cinnamon Girl rocks.

I grew up listening to Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. Each an incredible musician in their own right and their harmony together is probably some of the best music made in the 60's 70's and 80's.

Thank you for another good reaction. If you liked this, you will probably like Neil's live version of "The Needle and The Damage Done." Check it out.

You should listen to Neil sing "Helpless." There's a great live version in the movie "The Last Waltz" by Martin Scorsese.

Love that song; you should play the Neil Young - Ohio video, and Southern Man but not the live version, and Needle And The Damage Done [Unplugged]

Harry Chapin - Cat's in the Cradle or Alan Parson's Project - Old and Wise are two similar songs in theme. Time passing by...

I was a teenager when I first heard this song. Now I'm an old man in my 60s. My view of the song at the time was that it represented a difference in generations more than just a difference in age. The youth of that time (the hippy era) had a free spirit much more so than the generations that came before, and that was frowned upon (often verbally) by older generations. Now that I'm older, I think I'm somewhat more pragmatic, but I'd like to think that I've held onto much of that free spirit I had in my youth, and that my generation has been able to pass that spirit on to succeeding generations. Now, as an old man, listening to this song again, I would agree with my earlier assessment. Thank you for sharing your reaction to it. 😊

Neil Young's catalogue is well worth your time. It spans 5 decades and is hugely varied in style and intent. His lyrics often touch on the weird things we all experience and thoughts we have.

Recommend: Neil Young. Song is Harvest Moon. Official Video. Although some of his live performances of this song are great. 😊😊
