I saw the man break and leave, and the girls were wondering what his problem was.)

For reference, at this point all men are fully aware you don't mean it when you say "Do whatever you want". However on principle we will do just that, because you have justified it by failing to communicate like a reasonable and well adjusted adult.

My last girlfriend would have many recurring nightmares of me doing bad things and mistreating her, the exact opposite of our actual relationship. We worked together to compartmentalized it as the dream guy being a totally different person, and she never blamed me for any of it.
