Do otome games have recurring character tropes? - Otome Game Lessons

Some of you requested me to make a video talking about otome games and reverse harem anime character tropes months ago, and I have finally gotten around to it! ✨

In this video I have discussed multiple otome game characters and what "category" they would all fit under.

If you have any questions, please do comment below and I'll try and answer to my best ability 💕

As always, thank you for your support and hopefully this video on otome games helps you learn something new.

Quick correction and fun fact: Shota is short for Shoutarou complex. Shoutarou is the name of a young character in Tetsujin 28-go. This was actually a term made up as a joke but it ended up sticking. I didn't know this until I made this video, I guess you learn new things every day 😁

Yeah. Yanderes do have many fans. As for me, they are my least favorite trope since I prefer characters who will treat the MC better than they do. I do understand that it's just a fantasy for the people who like yanderes, but I just prefer LIs who will treat the MC in a more healthy way.

i never usually like the overly flirty guys. Almost every otome game has one

I started playing Yosuga's route and when I first met Riku, I saw him as nothing more than a man with a stick up his ass. But as I saw him more frequently and saw him get flustered a few times I realized it was nothing more than a hard exterior to protect his soft center that I wish to get to once I finish Yosuga's route. I felt the same way for Takeru in Collar Malice. I thought it'd be impossible for him to win me over, but once I got past his harsh words, I realize how much of a softie he is for the MC and I LOVE him. Yup, I definitely have a soft spot for tsunderes. Oh! And childhood friends are definitely one of my personal favorites, especially if they're redheads. <3

I see Impey and Enomoto as himbos instead of deredere. They act like the dumb blondes within their group. 😂
(and i noticed the cage 😏)

I love yanderes too ♥︎ Recently the o-gataken is slowly becoming one of my favorite tropes 🥺

I wish for more kansai-ben characters 😩

You know ... even if tsunderes are my favorte trope, I don't like Shin from Amnesia. I thought he wa too much abrasive/tsun. Not to mention ... the fact that the MC of the game is so silent doesn't help.

My favourites are probably deredere, oresama and players lol There's just something about someone being flirty with all the girls but then only REALLY falling for the MC that gets me.
Least favourites are menhas, yandere and shotas. No abusive boys for me, just cinnamon rolls and nice, wholesome relationships lol

Nice video! Very interesting.
My favorite tropes are tsundere, kuudere and dandere.
I like that, in the beginning, they (tsunderes, kuuderes and danderes) don't care much for the main character or even dislike the main character in some cases (usually with tsunderes), but then we see the development of the relationship, we see them start to care for the MC and fall in love with her.
Also, with tsunderes, I like when there is some bickering, some back and forth, between them at first. And then we see them falling in love with each othe and start being more caring.
As for examples ...
My favorite otome tsundere LI is Rod Widdensov from Cinderella phenomenon. And, by the way, Lucette, the MC of this game, is another great tsundere.
A kuudere ... well, I don't ship Hanzo much with Enju and I prefer her with Gekkamaru, but Hanzo himself is a great example of kuudere.
As for dandere ... I haven't seen many danderes in the games I played, but I like Darren from the game Nicole.

I feel attacked 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I love Kanato. I know I shouldn't cuz he's horrible but he's my horrible little rotten cinnamon roll lol In real life I hate bad boys but in otome games I find them so hard to resist. The badder the better. Also have a weak spot for shota characters because they usually have the underdog story or just super cute and I just wanna adopt them. Also im the crazy type who don't mind friendship plots in my otome games lol 😍 I do also find myself unable to resist a tsundere. Omg sorry im rambling. Lol Oh yeah also I dunno if it's a trope but I also love the baker boys. The ones who will freaking drown you in all the cakes and cookies you could ever want and basically wear an apron 24/7 lol 😆

I am on the exact same page as you with the poster boys! I was *really* looking forward to Akaza's route in Olympia Soirée, but I just found the other characters more interesting! 😅

Idk if this would be considered a trope, but, those characters that at a certain point want to go away or push away the MC, especially after getting close. I absolutely hate that I can go from love to forever hate for a character after that xD
For liking, any character that makes me laugh I guess, so you can add here the oddballs, himbos and some gaps (+loyal). But, when I go blind to see what I get, idk W H Y I always fall into the messed up guy's routes :_D ahahaha~ *cries*

I'm not sure with Hijikata classified as Dandere. But maybe it's because I often listened him in Drama CDs, which showed more of his kinder and hilarious side.

I thought Tokisada is supposed to be the shota of the Olympia Soiree? Sure, Himuka looks young, but I think Tokisada fits more for the shota title.

I'm okay with most poster boys... My problem with most poster boys is their typical characteristic of being "perfect-like" and other characters often implied in the game the poster boy is the most suitable for heroines, etc. The character themselves aren't bad, but it became boring and repetitive to have characters with these characteristics as poster boys. The only poster boys that I know didn't follow this "tradition" is Hijikata and Chitose from Toki no Kizuna.

Yandere...yeah, I don't like this type. There're some that I can tolerate as long as not too much like Tohma (no offense, really). For a second, I thought Iba from Hakuoki could be a yandere, but he's not (to my relief). 😅

I wonder if the time will come where we can see more characters who are none at all of the typical tropes.

O-gataken is definitely my favourite troupe🥺 but I find it hard to come across this route. Yukimura Sanada (Samurai Ballad) is one of my favourite o-gataken character. Thankyou for suggesting yamato(?) from psyche delic, will put him in my to-do-list ^^ Can someone reccs me more character for this troupe? really appreciate it🥰

I am sucker for tsunderes. I know this game is NOT an Otome, but when I watched someone play Fire Emblem: 3 Houses, I was drawn to Felix from the Blue Lions and his confession scene to female Byleth had me in stitches, especially when he did a classic tsundere trope- turning your back on the MC when you're flustered. But yeah after watching the "teaser trailer" for Cupid Parasite, I instantly guessed who the tsundere one was lol. I also did like the "silent" dere. For me it does give off that 'mysterious vibe' that always draws me in.

Your least fav is my least fav too. It just feels wrong. But I wouldn't like the 'older man' trope either, ick.

I saw a lot of people on Reddit refused to play Helvetica's route in Bustafellows so I'm surprised to hear he's someone favorite lol. I haven't played the game myself yet but I always 100% otome games so I'll get to him some day.

My favorite type is definitely kuuderes, meganes and older guys and when they all combine im like yes perfect guy right there. Also I love the weird ones from that category I love mozu but man i can't stand kei (spoilers: it was mainly bcuz he was using the mc to commit suicide so i was like bruh wtf). I like oresamas sometimes too it depends on how they are written tho.
